The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria is a public art museum dedicated to the celebration of art. With vision, leadership and scholarship, we will engage and inspire diverse audiences through exhibition, interpretation and stewardship of the collection.
When it first opened in 1951, the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria exhibited art in the historic 1889 mansion that is now adjacent to its seven modern galleries. With over 18,000 works of art, the Art Gallery has the largest public collection in BC and is a vibrant and active part of Victoria's artist community.
Monthly Family Sunday programs, and art classes Children's Studio (semester based programs and camps). Seasonal exhibitions of art: Canadian, international, historical, contemporary, decorative, Asian and First Nations. Weekly exhibition tours and public programs - group tours are welcome with advance booking. Gallery Shop with artisan made pottery, glass, jewelry, and more as well as an extensive library of art books, posters and cards.
Did you know that we offer admission by donation on the first Tuesday of every month? We're also open until 9pm every Thursday and often offer special programming like lectures, film screenings and tours that night making it a great time for a visit. We are Canada's premier location to learn about Emily Carr through her art in our permanent exhibition open year-round. We feature over 30 exhibitions every year so you'll always see something new! The Art Gallery has been offering art classes on-site since it first opened its doors in 1951.
Connection to Community
The Gallery engages in extensive outreach activities through local school districts from Victoria to Sooke & Saltspring Island bringing art education to 13,000+ school children & youth every year with Gallery in the Schools, New Extreme, Artist in Residence, etc. The Gallery also provides professional development for teachers to give them tools to embed art education into their approach to curriculum. Through its various programs the Art Gallery is dedicated to making art accessible to one and all.
Often referred to as a "hidden gem" the Art Gallery is only minutes from downtown by car and a short pleasant walk or bicycle ride from many other downtown Victoria attractions. A bonus: free parking in our neighborhood!
