Ballet Victoria (BV) is Vancouver Island’s most acclaimed professional ballet company offering audiences across BC high caliber performances each season. Artistic Director Paul Destrooper creates new choreography for BV’s eight company dancers in almost every production and collaborates with choreographers, musicians, and artists to bring audiences exciting, surprising, and uniquely West Coast programs.
Founded in 2002, BV has become an important cultural, artistic, and economic asset to the region. From a struggling company producing one show each season, the company now provides audiences with four productions that boast live music, local artistic collaborations, and classical and original repertoire. BV reaches almost 20,000 people each season and travels across BC performing in main stage theatres in cities like North Vancouver and in school gymnasiums in villages as small as the aboriginal fishing village of Kyuquot.
Ballet Victoria offers many programs including:
- Four shows each year, one at the McPherson Playhouse and three at the Royal Theatre
- Adult ballet classes every Tuesday and Thursday evening (7pm - 8:30pm)
- Youth dance classes (ballet, jazz, contemporary, tap) from ages 4 and up
- Youth dance camp and summer dance intensive programs
- Tea for Tutu Performances for seniors and families: four community events at Kirk Hall, 680 Courtney St. previewing upcoming productions
- Student Outreach/School Performances in Victoria and across BC
In 2012 Artistic Director Paul Destrooper was named recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for outstanding community service.
In 2012 BV dancers were invited to the Lieutenant Governor’s House to perform for the Order of BC recipients award ceremony
In 2011, BV dancers were invited to perform for the Governor General of Canada’s first visit to BC. Paul Destrooper was given the honour of being Master of Ceremonies for that event.
In 2010, BV dancers performed in Morioka, Japan as special guests of Victoria Mayor Dean Fortin for a special ceremony celebrating the twinning of the two cities.
Connection to Community
BV is dedicated to the health and wellbeing of our community. Located in downtown Victoria, BV strategically brings dancers to live and work in the region and employs local businesses and artists to circulate capital back into the local economy. We also design all of our outreach programs to meet the specific needs of our community members. The growth of our community connections is indicative of the need for our programs and the important role we play as an active community member.
In 2014, Ballet Victoria started its own not for profit recreational dance school training aspiring dancers in the art of ballet.
Ballet Victoria’s studio is located in the heart of downtown Victoria, in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church.
