We are a community built around passion for the outdoors. For over 100 years, we've been teaching skills, sharing adventures, creating volunteers, and conserving land.
The Mountaineers enriches lives and communities by helping people explore, conserve, learn about and enjoy the lands and waters of the Pacific Northwest and beyond.
The Mountaineers is an outdoor education nonprofit of 10,000+ active members offering you ways to get outside and get connected to a community passionate about the outdoors. Formed in 1906, we've been getting people of all ages outside safely and responsibly for over 100 years. We work to preserve the wild backcountry where we play for many generations to come.
The Mountaineers has a small full-time staff, but volunteers make our hundreds of monthly activities happen. These passionate volunteers lead classes and activities including hiking, climbing, scrambling, navigation, first aid, sailing, photography, and skiing, as well as organize community activities like film festivals and potlucks. Volunteer instructors are inspired by the outdoors to share their knowledge.
Our volunteer instructors are here because they want to be. Because of this we have an amazing student to instructor ratio and an unmatched culture of cooperation and teamwork.
In addition to the recreational activities we pursue, The Mountaineers works to ensure that wilderness areas are preserved and protected through the actions of our Conservation, Recreation Resources and Stewardship divisions. Volunteer members track issues, mobilize members, perform trail maintenance, work with coalitions and lobby legislators (local and national) in a continued effort to protect and conserve our natural landscape.
It's easy to get involved with The Mountaineers. We offer trips, classes and events for all ages and experience levels. If you are an absolute beginner with a desire to get outside, or you are an experienced outdoor enthusiast, we have something for you. Our trips range from easy to very strenuous, with everything in between. You pick your own pace.
Mountaineers members enjoy benefits including access to all of our classes, workshops, and mountain homes, along with sweet deals on travel and gear, but more importantly our members join a community of outdoor lovers and adventurers. Membership dues are paid annually.
The Mountaineers is a 501(c)(3) organization. As a nonprofit, 100% of your dues and donations are tax-deductible as a donation. Our Employer Identification Number (EIN) — Federal Tax Identification Number — is 27-3009280.
