YouthWrite is an inclusive, multi-disciplinary writing camp that offers young writers the chance to work with superbly talented instructors from many facets of the performing, visual, musical, dance, film, and written arts. The organization is a collective of past instructors, supervisors, and coordinator working together to bring you the experience you've come to know and love for nineteen years!
YouthWrite Society Canada is all about the creative arts and creative writing and celebrates critical and creative thinking that seeks to broaden young participants’ global and environmental awareness, modelling writing as a powerful tool for activism.
YouthWrite offers classes that address multiple learning styles and cares about who and where you are - past and present participants - WE want to stay in touch with YOU and celebrate your growth and achievements.
We hope to soon offer an online Blue Pencil Café for participants to work one-on-one with instructors après YouthWrite.
We invite participants, instructors, supers, and alumni to stay connected and involved - STAY in touch! Let us know about your writing and career achievements!
YouthWrite hopes to cross borders and oceans with opportunities to take the YouthWrite experience overseas.
YouthWrite, a camp for kids who love to write...just about anything!©
YouthWrite was conceived and formed in 1996 by coordinator/creator Gail Sidonie Sobat. Our first home was the Bennett Centre, Edmonton, AB. In years to come, YouthWrite expanded to a weekend winter camp, Winter WordPlay and a two-week immersion camp at Kamp Kiwanis, near Bragg Creek, AB.
YouthWrite is delighted to return to the Bennett Centre and to an expand our program to Kamp Kiwanis for our 19th wordplayful year!
Our courses may focus on artistic disciplines young writers may never have tried before--illustrating, songwriting, body percussion and words, yoga breathing and words, writing for video games--but in taking the risk to try something new, they learn something amazing about themselves!
Some other courses in our multi-disciplinary approach to writing include:
Many of our YouthWrite alumni have gone on to professional writing and related careers such as television writing, playwriting, journalism, animation, filmmaking, English and graduate studies in English, magazine writing and editing, and communications. Many continue to write and are now themselves published authors.
