Elisabet Ney Museum

Elisabet Ney Museum

In 1892, European sculptor Elisabet Ney (1833-1907) began construction of a limestone neo-classical studio in Austin, Texas. In this studio, christened “Formosa,” Ney would sculpt legendary Texans and create fine art. She also assembled a remarkable collection of sculptures she created as a bold and charismatic young Berliner years before. She spent the last years of her life in Austin, working and gathering a veritable salon of local color, ranging from artists and musicians to politicians and priests. Holding forth on creekside benches, discussions of politics, philosophy and art lasted long into the warm Texas nights.

At her death, her friends preserved the contents of the beloved studio. It has operated as a museum ever since. A cornerstone of Austin’s Hyde Park National Register Historic District, the Elisabet Ney Museum continues to refresh and energize, inspire and enchant visitors of all ages. The life and spirit of Miss Ney, the landscape, its city and its citizens, and the remarkable people she sculpted await.

Admission is free. All-ages tours of Miss Ney’s castle and her work are available upon request. More than just history, The Ney focuses attention on the nature of storytelling itself. Tours of the Historic Landscape Recreation are also offered. The Ney has several day-long events, for instance Portraiture in the Park in September, Ney Day in June, and Celebrate Urban Birds in February. Inquire about Classes and summer camps.
