What is 'Winnipeg in Motion'?
'Winnipeg in Motion' is a community-wide collaboration that supports Winnipeggers to be physically active for health benefits.
The vision for Winnipeg in motion is a supportive community where residents include physical activity in their daily lives for health, well-being and enjoyment. Engaging citizens, groups, and organizations is essential to the creation of supportive communities and the success of Winnipeg in motion. Communities working together will be able to identify opportunities and barriers to being physically active and plan, develop, coordinate and deliver services that support their residents to include physical activity in their daily lives.
Winnipeg in motion will support communities to consider complementary approaches such as physical activity promotion, health promotion, community development, social marketing, active transportation, and urban and environmental planning, in the development and implementation of community-based physical activity promotion strategies. By using complementary approaches and building on the shared knowledge and expertise of the multiple sectors that work and live within their community, communities will develop effective physical activity promotion strategies and resources that support their local culture and priority populations.
Winnipeg in motion recognizes the importance of communities working with education, business, government, recreation, health and other sectors to address barriers to participating in physical activity. Barriers that may exist include lack of time, energy, excessive cost and issues related to poverty.
The Winnipeg in motion coordinating partners, the University of Manitoba, University of Winnipeg, the City of Winnipeg, the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority and Manitoba in motion are committed to sharing their knowledge and expertise to support communities in developing physical activity promotion strategies that promote the health of their citizens.
