Interesting place to visit with lots of displays to see and learn from. Especially nice during the Christmas season when the castle is beautifully decorated. When I visited, there was no elevator, and lots of stairs, so don't bring your child in a stroller. There is a huge lawn that kids can run around on if they need to burn some energy after being nice and quiet in the castle!

I not only love Craigdarroch Castle, but the history of it as well. What a shame that the entire estate, grounds and all could not have been preserved. If you are really interested in the history and the building itself, go with plenty of time so you will not be rushed. Christmas time is an excellent time to go as the castle is beautifully and tastefully decorated for the occasion, and if you are taking children, I should tell them that there will be a test afterwards to see how much they remember and observed, then plan your questions so they are suitable to their ages. For example, the Castle has been used for movie films, can you name the movie? Here did the servants live? How many fireplaces does the Castle have? How many floors? How many children did the Dunsmuirs have? Did all of the Dunsmuir women marry? Do you know where they are buried?

Taking the family to a castle is a really unique way to spend a rainy day, and the view from the top is spectacular. It feels as if you're taking a step back in time and well worth the visit, however, I think I definitely appreciated the history a little more than the kidlets! But it's a fun and interactive way for them to get exposed to history.
