About

We offer an early childhood music education program for ages 4 to Grade 2 and triple threat performance programs for students in grades three through to college, with semi-professional adult ensembles, and an adult recreational choir. Also recently introduced is a music education program for special needs children aged 8 to 15. Our choral programs incorporate movement, dance and theatre arts for an exciting and challenging experience that covers all genres of music from classical, to folk, rock and pop. All participants are able to develop their skills with a challenging and comprehensive regimen of rehearsals, workshops and performances appropriate to their age. The Youth Singers program allows students and adults alike the opportunity to fulfill their dream of participating in the performing arts in a diverse array of musical styles. Our main program runs from September to June with new registrations taken in September and January each year.

History

Recognizing a need within the community, the Youth Singers of Calgary was created in 1985 by Shirley Penner who quickly enlisted two wonderful resources in Darlene Dusevic and Tricia Penner. Together they developed a unique performing arts organization; providing an opportunity for young people to express themselves onstage through music, dance and theatre. Their commitment to music, excellence in teaching and strong team approach has sustained the organization to the present day.

More than twenty-five years later Youth Singers continues to provide a unique performing arts opportunity for young people.

Additional Information

A major reason for the program’s success is the dynamic team of individuals behind the scenes. “We’ve been extremely fortunate to have attracted some of the finest music educators, choreographers and musicians to the program; without question our Artistic Team is responsible for helping make Youth Singers the fine and respected organization it has become,” says Shirley Penner. "The faculty is chosen not only on the basis of their qualifications, but also their ability to relate to the specific age group with which they work."
