Victoria is arguably one of the best cities in Canada to raise a family! With countless community events, kid-friendly festivals, and year round activities, it doesn’t matter if it is a scorching summer day, or drizzly December afternoon, your family will always have something to do.
Pop on your toques before heading downtown to start the year off right at the annual fireworks display, maybe take part in the polar bear swim on New Year’s day if you’re feeling extra brave. We recommend staying bundled for Chinese New Year in February, as your kids will want to spend the whole day in Canada’s oldest Chinatown.
The city starts heating up in the spring with fun festivals and sporting events. By March, the cherry blossoms are out and the city is colourful and alive. We suggest taking the kids to the Beacon Hill Children’s Farm, the Viking themed Highland Festival, and the Oak Bay Tea Party for a guaranteed good time.
Summer is when Victoria really starts to sizzle. Besides the awesome beaches and parks, there are too many festivals and markets to name! Celebrating Canada Day in the capital is a must. Your kids will love the fireworks, live entertainment, and Canadian pride. I think many locals will agree that heading to a splash park by day and an outdoor movie by night, is a great (and free) way to get through those hot summer days.
Even in the fall, when the weather starts to cool off, the city still has so much to offer. Make sure you take advantage of a photo-op at one of the popular pumpkin patches, and as Halloween nears, check out Galey’s Farm and their Festival of Fear for a scary good time. Once December hits we suggest finishing the year off right with one of the many winter and Christmas festivals for kids in Victoria. Our personal favourites include the Santa Claus Parade and the Christmas lights and outdoor skating rink at the Butchart Gardens.
