Carol Swainson’s career has afforded her opportunities to work in K-12 independent and public elementary and middle schools across the country. She has taught nearly every discipline, including math and science in Spanish, and has been a classroom teacher for third graders through adults. Carol is currently the Head of School at San Francisco Schoolhouse and serves as a peer affinity group facilitator at the National Association for Independent School’s (NAIS) People of Color Conference. She has also been a member of NAIS’ Call-to-Action, a national think tank for diversity. Prior to joining Schoolhouse, she served as Head of Bentley School’s K-8 program and as Associate Head of School at St. James’ Episopal School in Los Angeles. She held leadership positions at the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools and Head-Royce School in Oakland, served as Diversity Coordinator and French and Spanish teacher at Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C.

Over the years, she has presented workshops on diversity at the Across Colors Conference, the East Bay Independent School Symposium, the POCIS Parent Conference, the New York State Association of Independent Schools (NYSAIS) Diversity Conference, the Association for Independent Maryland Schools (AIMS), the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) Annual Conference, the NAIS People of Color Conference, and numerous school communities across the country. In 2005, her diversity work at Sidwell Friends was recognized by NAIS when the school received the Leading Edge Award for Equity and Justice. In 2019, she received a grant from the Roberta Flack Foundation to produce her educational film on how to talk to your children about race. Carol lives with her husband in Oakland, where they co-direct the International Peace and Art Center that promotes peace, harmony, and well-being through the arts.
