Dr. Vandana Shiva: 8th Annual Stephen H. Schneider Memorial Lecture

Dr. Vandana Shiva: 8th Annual Stephen H. Schneider Memorial Lecture

The Annual Stephen H. Schneider Memorial Lecture honors former Stanford professor Dr. Schneider, world-renowned climate researcher and activist. His passing in 2010 was a profound loss to our campus and the scientific community. His legacy lives on in this annual lecture event, which seeks to bring influential environmental activists from across fields and continents to inspire the next generation of leaders.

Dr. Vandana Shiva—revolutionary author, activist, and scientist—is a leading voice in the global environmental justice movement. She has authored over twenty books advocating for food justice, sustainable agriculture, and the rights of women, workers, and indigenous people. She declares in her book Soil not Oil that “the solution to climate change and the solution to poverty are the same.” Industrial, chemical-based farming, she argues, fuels climate change and food insecurity. She discusses how small-scale farmers in the developing world can empower themselves, their communities, and local climate action by cultivating organic, native staple crops.

Dr. Shiva is coming to share her story—her journey from PhD science philosopher to founder of Navdanya, a global non-profit advocating for food sovereignty and economic prosperity in the developing world.

Her books will be available at the Stanford Bookstore and at the event venue before the lecture. Dr. Shiva will be signing books in Cemex Auditorium after the event from 8:30-9pm.

Free parking is available in the Knight Management Center Garage (655 Knight Way) after 4 pm.

This event is organized by Students for a Sustainable Stanford, with additional support from the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment.
