Victoria Children's Choir Classical Christmas Concert - Seeking Refuge

Victoria Children's Choir Classical Christmas Concert - Seeking Refuge

A moving new perspective on the nativity story, evoking the struggle of Mary, Joseph and Baby Jesus as refugees travelling in a strange land, seeking the protection and kindness of strangers. As the author Anne Both explained in an interview, “Leaving one’s home and family and friends to escape danger requires trust in the goodness of others whom you do not know - belief in a shared sense of humanity. I hope we deserve the trust and hope of refugees. We mustn’t fail them.”

Everyone may already know the story of how Jesus was humbly born in a manger, but Refuge is a lyrical depiction of what came next: the new family's travels through the desert, fleeing Herod's soldiers in order to find a safe place to welcome their son into the world. A poetic and refreshing look at the classic Christmas story that's never been more relevant, Refuge asks us to consider the modern day implications of being forced to flee your home country.

The story will be enriched by children's voices soaring into the high vaults of the Cathedral.
