STEM Hacks 2020

STEM Hacks 2020

STEM Hacks is an annual science and engineering competition founded by Mathstronauts, which takes place at McMaster University. It is a unique opportunity for middle school students from all over the Southern Ontario as it is the only event of its kind that gives young people a chance to perform, compete and excel in a hackathon styled environment. At STEM Hacks, participants learn the skills and knowledge they require to complete either a science or engineering challenge. Participants work in teams of 4 to 5 and are paired with a university or college mentor, who assists in their design process. Upon developing their “hacks”, students present to a panel of judges and at a grand closing ceremony, their projects are demonstrated and prizes are awarded to the best designs. Participants are graded on the breadth of their knowledge, their level of technical understanding and application, and their creativity and ingenuity in design. STEM Hacks has been offered at McMaster University annually for four years since its inception. Through this event, we have engaged nearly 700 middle school students to date, along with another 400 mentors, volunteers, judges and community members.
