Bug Tour at the Leighton with Jim Critchley

Event at Leighton Art Centre

Time Price
Sat, 1pm - 3pm

EEEEW gross!!! Really? Or how about “beautiful adapters to the environment"? Have you ever wondered what a particular bug is called? Why it’s found where it is? What it eats? What the life of a bug really like? This interactive summer hike will introduce you to many of the insects and other invertebrates found at and near the Leighton Art Centre. You’ll learn how to use field guides and your keen observation skills to determine their identities and we’ll capture and examine as many as we can and discuss how they fit into our ecosystem (Prairie and Eastern Slopes Mountain).

Please bring: a water bottle, butterfly net, long pants, insect repellant, sturdy shoes, sunscreen and a clean glass jar with a lid (to safely view our catches). Walking poles may be a good addition. Bring your camera and binoculars too! This excursion will start with an orientation followed by a walk through the meadow of the Leighton Art Centre property. Field guides and taxonomic keys (identification guides) will be supplied. We will try to start an inventory of the various invertebrate species present at the Leighton Art Centre.

This workshop is open to curious people of all ages! Families are welcome to join!

Single tickets: $15 or $35 for a family package (2 adults, 2 children).
