At Capilano University Children’s Centre we are committed to the language of pedagogy that has come to us from Reggio Emilia, Italy: a language of beauty, artistry, curiosity, invention, listening and dialogue. This commitment echoes in our approach to curriculum, documentation, and in our daily life with children. There are resonances as well in our environments and in our thinking about materials.
The Children’s Centre is not a space for children but one created with children. We view young children as “capable and full of potential; as persons with complex identities, grounded in their individual strengths and capacities” (BC’s Early Learning Framework) who actively participate in our common world.
We recognize the diversity and uniqueness of each child and their family. We honour each child as a unique, competent and capable individual and we are committed to offering an environment they can explore, in collaborative ways, at their own speed.
The Children’s Centre is a flexible and creative space, one that is free from the tight constraints of routine and over bearing structure; we strive to listen, observe and respond to children’s individual rhythms within our collective space. We value time, the journeys of learning and the pleasures of being together.
