Fall Learn to Paddle Sessions - Canoe & Kayak

WELCOME TO THE WASCANA CANOE AND KAYAK CLUB.
---------------------------------------------------
Our Spring Learn to Paddle sessions teach all the basic skills and abilities to join into the Wascana Racing Team or to jump in the family canoe. The program will end with a fun regatta where athletes can test all the new skills with thier canoe club buddies.

Get a early start with our spring after school sessions or our Full-Day Summer paddling Camps teach all the basic skills and abilities to join into the larger Wascana Racing program or to paddle the family canoe at the cottage. Each camp will end with a fun regatta where athletes can test all the new skills with thier canoe club buddies.

Paddlers will experiance single, double and four person racing canoes and kayaks; The 15 person Canadian War Canoe and 10 or 20 person dragon boat.

EQUIPMENT:

The canoe club will provide all paddling equipment. Although the club has PFD’s for paddlers use, participants are welcome to bring their own. PFD’s must fit ‘properly’ to be acceptable. Two changes of clothing will be required; clothing should be comfortable, loose fitting and preferably made of quick drying fabric (they do get wet!). Running shoes are required for dry-land practice activities. Sun screen, water bottle and snacks are needed for each training session.

PRE-REQUISITES

Although no paddling experience is required, participants must have a minimum swim competency. If asked to demonstrate swim ability the paddlers must be able to tread water for 1.5 minutes, stay afloat for 5 minutes without assistance, swim 50 metres (any stroke any speed) without a lifejacket or other flotation device. We can not stress enough the risk of putting non-swimmers on the water, it not only presents a risk to the participant but for staff and other participants as well.

If you are unsure of the ability to meet the minimum swim ability we encourage you to visit a local pool were there is a lifeguard on-duty and try it out.

* All U15 participants must wear life jackets or PFDs any time they are on the water*
