Summer Camp Contemporary

Run by Oklahoma Contemporary Arts Center Ages 3-18 yrs



Week 1 | May 29 - June 1 (four-day week)

Ages 5-6 | Painting Parade | Olivia Egan
Experience the wonder of painting through color, texture and movement. Inspired by the work of local artist Katelynn Knick, experiment with unexpected painting surfaces and play with fun techniques.

Ages 7-9 | Upcycled Sculptures | Erin Latham
Sarah Sze, contemporary installation artist, is the inspiration for this camp. Learn the process of creating a full-scale installation piece –- from drawing to prints to assembling an installation using found objects and repurposed materials. Campers will also explore additive sculptural techniques and basic kinetic art.

Ages 10-12 | Clay Sculpting | Perla Contreras
Create an original clay piece inspired by contemporary ceramic artist Elizabeth Kley. Experiment with handbuilding techniques and alternative surface finish processes, such as graffito.

Week 2 | June 4-8

jumpstART: Ages 4-5 | Alison Harris
Our jumpstART program will get any young artist up and moving with art! This half-day camp (9 a.m. - noon) includes music, movement and visual art activities that will ignite their curiosity.

Ages 5-6 | Mixed Media Kids | Annie Doan
Immerse yourself in color, line and space, all inspired by our current exhibiting artist. Explore Chiyoko Myose’s artistic practice, view her work in the galleries and experiment with a variety of mediums from painting to fiber art.

Ages 5-6 | Dino Madness! | Debra Detamore
Draw your own T-rex and paint a stegosaurus! Create paper and clay dinosaur sculptures, paintings and prints while learning about fossils. Learn more about work of paleo-artist Karen Carr, who brings dinosaurs to life through her illustrations and paintings.

Ages 7-9| Kooky Sculptures | Eric Lyons
Look at everyday items around you in new ways and be inspired by Jeff Koons and his iconic Balloon Dog series. Create your own bold and beautiful sculptures. There may even be a few balloon animal lessons!

Ages 7-9| | Native Symbols | Victoria Nevarez
After discussing Native American symbols of the past and present, explore symbols that represent our society today. Incorporate your life experiences, including friendships and family, into works of art. Projects include creating a winter count calendar, making a playable flute and crafting beautiful beadwork worn by men and women.

Ages 10-12| Creative Robotics | Angel Little
Creative Robotics is a STEAM-based program that introduces the concepts of artistic engineering through simple mechanical and algorithmic exploration. Learn the basics of functional coding, creative designing and the If-Then-Else approach to problem solving. Learn to identify the common stages of mechanical engineering, expressions and creation mapping as well as team-based development. At week’s end, each camper will have built a LEGO Technic Getaway Racer to take home.

Week 3 | June 11-15

Ages 5-6 | Big Brush! | Autumn Brown
Dream BIG! Discover the fun and expressive art of Fabienne Verdier. Use giant paintbrushes to create abstract paintings. Experiment with nontraditional and paintbrushes you have built to explore how brushes impact your artwork. Campers will leave this camp with big works of art and even bigger ideas!

Ages 5–6 & 7-9 | Art + Music: Collab Camp | Leslie Hensley & LaRissa Conn
Construct multiple art pieces using repurposed materials, and build your very own upcycled instruments. By using everyday found items, campers collaborate to experiment with mixed media and music all while having a blast!

Ages 7-9| Wacky World Designs | G. Patrick Riley
What does a future world look like to you? Design a box sculpture as well as a cityscape using mixed-media materials and create wearable art that ignites the imagination.

Ages 10-12| Clay Animation | Nicole Emmons-Willis
Learn how to animate clay under the camera using the technique of stop-motion animation. Experiment with different animation techniques and create animated characters. Together campers will collaborate on making a short film that will be screened during Friday’s Camp Contemporary Showcase!

Ages 13-15| Space and Scale Installation | Eric Lyons
Artist Richard Serra considers how people move through space and our relationship to our surroundings when constructing his monumental sculpture. Plan, sketch and learn about the importance of scale as you create sculptural work that responds to and consumes your personal space.

Our jumpstART program will get any young artist up and moving with art! This half-day camp (9 a.m. - noon) includes music, movement and visual art activities that will ignite their curiosity.

Ages 5-6 | Exploring Nature through Art | Jenny Elton
Combine the beauty of nature and art! Experiment with a variety of materials including pastels, watercolor and paper-mache with sticks, leaves and rocks to create artwork inspired by the natural world. Learn about the diverse plants and animals of Oklahoma and use what you learn to create 2-D pieces, sculptures and collaborative artworks. By the end of the week, campers will see how artists, like Lynne Hull, use their artwork to explore and impact the environment for the better.

Ages 5-6 | Light and Shadow Art Show | BC Sommers
How does light and shadow shape our world? Explore the artwork of Kumi Yamashita and her shadow sculptures and investigate light board art, shadow puppetry, additive and subtractive color mixing and much more!

Ages 7-9| Creative Poem Writing | Gwendolyn Hooks
Your imagination and pencil are all that is needed for this camp! Read and write poems and collaborate with others to create two-voice poems. Paul Fleischman’s Joyful Noise – Poems for Two Voices will serve as inspiration, and by week’s end you will have your own book filled with original poems.

Ages 7-9| Glow-in-the-ART | Debra Detamore
Inspired by contemporary artist Bruce Monro, this camp combines art and science. Work with LED lights, paints and mixed-media materials while learning the properties of light and how our eyes see color. To end the week, campers create a glow-in-the-dark studio installation for family and friends to enjoy.

Ages 10-12| Mixed Media Movement | Darra Maxwell-Eek
Get ready for a fast-paced camp and focus on artist Jenny Kemp’s geometric designs, color, rhythm and repetition. Experiment with 3-D art, collage and mosaic using acrylic paint, chalk pastels, oil pastels and more.

Ages 5-6 | World of Dots | Annie Doan
The world is full of shapes, patterns and dots! Inspired by artist Yayoi Kusama, use a variety of techniques to make bold, fun and playful works of art.

Ages 5-6 | GaGa Over Art Camp | Leslie Hensley
Singer-songwriter Lady GaGa serves as the inspiration for this camp! Learn about music, movement, fashion and imagination and create an outfit inspired by the dynamic artist. Not to be missed because, as GaGa says, “life is art all the time.”

Ages 7-9 | Super Hero Creation | Danny Gordon
With direction from local caricature artist Danny Gordon, create your own super hero! In this imaginative and challenging camp, design your very own colorful hero -- complete with an inventive name, identity, story line, sidekick and nemesis.

Ages 7-9 | Foundations of Hip Hop | Angel Little
The Foundations of Hip Hop program is created to educate and empower the culture of hip hop and its primary elements. Engage in graffiti, DJ-ing, MC-ing and breaking, as well as learn the dependency between the four elements. This class offers a basic introduction to the history and inspirations of the culture. It also provides an environment that supports community encouragement, critical understanding and self-motivation.

Ages 10-12 | Contemporary Fiber Arts | Jessica Petrus
Using natural and synthetic dyes, work directly with multiple fabrics and fibers to master the art of dyeing. Learn color techniques and pattern styles like tie-dye, batik and shibori.

Ages 13-15 | Animated Performance | Nicole Emmons-Willis
Inspired by artist Miwa Matreyek, experiment with combining projected animations and live performance to create a mesmerizing viewer experience. Using pre-existing animations, campers create some of their own and build an animated world using sound, projections and movement. The week will end with campers performing their piece at the Camp Contemporary Showcase.

Ages 5-6 | Printmaking Explorers | Annalisa Campbell
What adventure will you explore through printmaking? Perhaps a favorite vacation, a hidden hideout or a winding hiking path? Explore new methods in printmaking as we map out our favorite places. Be prepared to venture to the deep seas and highest mountains.

Ages 5-6 | Mini Performers | Alyssa Marie Pearson
Learn the basics of working together through singing, dancing and movement. Exercise your vocal and performance skills all while having a blast! On Friday, campers perform for family and friends at the Camp Contemporary Showcase.

Ages 7-9 | Shadow Sculptures | BC Sommers
Explore the world of light and shadow and learn about artist Kumi Yamashita and her wondrous shadow sculptures. This camp will include instruction in shadow-puppetry techniques, overhead and slide projections, shadow screens, light-board art, installation and group storytelling. You won’t want to miss this dynamic camp!

Ages 7-9 | Clay Creations | Perla Contreras
Clay is one of the most versatile mediums in art. Learn handbuilding techniques like pinching, coiling and modeling to create your own one-of-a-kind clay works.

Ages 10-12 | 3-D Installation Art | Taylor Knight
Check out contemporary artist Kirk Maxson and focus on artworks using multiple copies of an object, shape and form to make one unified body of work. Explore how the use of repetition and rhythm can be used to form a holistic hanging piece of art.

Ages 5-6 | Big and Bold! | Kelly Smith
Focus on shapes and colors and get ready to work BIG in this exciting camp. Use your hands and imagination to draw, collage and paint artworks that are big and bold.

Ages 5-6 | Underwater Art World | Leslie Hensley
Splash into creativity! Inspired by artist Jason deCaires Taylor and his underwater sculptures, use recycled and environmentally friendly materials to make an underwater world of your own.

Ages 7-9 | Origami Everything | G. Patrick Riley
This camp focuses on the ancient art of origami while looking at contemporary artist Kevin Box. Create large and small origami animals using paper, cardboard, watercolor, paints and more. It’s origami time!

Ages 7-9 | Theater Performance | Alyssa Marie Pearson
This fun and active camp teaches young thespians the basics of working together to create and execute a skit. Exercise your vocal and performance skills all while having a blast! On Friday, campers will perform their short play for family and friends at the Camp Contemporary Showcase.

Ages 10-12 | Animation Installation | Nicole Emmons-Willis
Immersive art often combines elements of sculpture and installation. In Oklahoma City, Factory Obscura's Shift at Current Studio demonstrated how rich this experience can be. Join us and experiment with a variety of animation techniques and add the element of projection to enhance the viewer’s experience and completely immerse them in art!

Ages 5-6 | Pop Art Kids | Becki Lowber-Collins
Pop Art is the focus of this camp. Use your imagination and learn new drawing, painting, collage and printmaking skills that incorporate pop culture, everyday objects and comics into your work.

Ages 5-6 | Shining Sculptures | Leslie Hensley
It’s your time to SHINE! Inspired by Japanese sculptor Toshihiko Mitsuya, build wondrous shining sculptures and installations made completely out of aluminum foil and unexpected material.

Ages 7-9 | Street Rhythm and Dance | Joshua Okpaura
Get down and rock the floor because it’s Street Rhythm and Dance time! Learn a variety of street-dance basics as well as team building, self-expression, reflection, self-discipline and problem solving. Together with your crew, show off your moves when you perform at Friday’s Camp Contemporary Showcase.

Ages 7-9 | Fiber Works | Debbie Elledge
What can you create with fabric, felt, yarn, string and feathers? The possibilities are endless! Taking inspiration from Oklahoma fiber artist Sarah Atlee, use a variety of fiber materials to create original dynamic art pieces.

Ages 10-12 | Up Close: Portrait Painting | Eric Lyons
Discover the work of artist Chuck Close. Create a personal portrait based on Close’s style, and learn techniques of drawing through a grid process making enlarged acrylic painted portraits square by square.

Ages 13-15 | Architectural Concepts | Autumn Brown
Build on your art, design and architecture knowledge through an introduction to the work of contemporary artist Liu Wei. Explore the mixture of architectural elements and sculpture and experiment with line, shape and form in both 2-D and 3-D projects. Through paint, paper and experimental objects, create your own whimsical urban dwelling.

Week 9 | July 30- August 3

Ages 5-6 | Patterns that POP | Aimee Ballenger
Look at the cheerful and colorful artwork of Romero Britto and spend the week creating dynamic art that incorporates your favorite things. Bright colors, bold lines and fun patterns will make your 2-D and 3-D pieces really POP!

Ages 5-6 | Clay Kids | Olivia Egan
Come play with clay! Collaborate on a large-scale ceramic sculpture by combining individual creations into one unified piece. Get your hands dirty while learning about the fun and tactile aspects of 3-D art!

Ages 7-9 | Runway Costume Design | Dayna Brown
Learn the basics of sewing -- including threading and running a sewing machine, hand sewing, building patterns and choosing fabrics. Study the work of designer Alexander McQueen and incorporate aspects of the natural world into a forest costume. On Friday, display your designs on the runway during the Camp Contemporary Showcase!

Ages 7-9 | Intro to Creative Robotics | Angel Little

Learn how to paint a mural with a variety of techniques including freehand, grid method, projection and more. Collaborate, create and sketch and work directly on a three-panel wall to create a large mural.

Ages 5-6 | Let’s Get Moving! | Leslie Hensley
Inspired by exhibiting artist Chiyoko Myose, get ready to get up and move in this camp. Transform yourself into moving pieces of art and, together, create a moving group installation. A variety of music will be incorporated into the week to really get things moving!

Ages 7-9 | Monster Design | Danny Gordon
Design the world's coolest monster toy! Put your imagination to the test and be challenged to create an original monster toy, complete with accessories.

Ages 10-12 | Colorful Cardboard Creations | Autumn Brown
Following the influence of contemporary artist Sol Calero, create bright paintings, colorful 3-D sculptures and personal cardboard installations. This camp will incorporate design, construction and original abstract thought.

Ages 13-15| Ceramic Faces | KJ Collins
Learn clay handbuilding techniques and the basics of throwing clay on a wheel. Combine your new skills to create an expressive and humorous ceramic face jug that are fun and functional.
