Youth Learn to Row - Beginner

Run by Victoria City Rowing Club Ages 11-17 yrs



Youth Introduction to Rowing is the perfect introduction for those who want to try the sport of rowing for the first time! This program will teach basic skills in rowing technique and boat handling with a focus on sculling boats. Come and see how fun and rewarding rowing can be!

This program is for those brand new to rowing. Participants will learn the basic movements of the rowing stroke in sculling boats (single, double, quad). We will review the following elements of the sport of rowing for the participants: basic movements of the stroke; oar grip; balance drills; safety; terminology. This is a must for anyone wanting to move into more advanced rowing programs!

Learned skills include:
- basic rowing terminology
- Holding balance in a rowing shell
- Proper sequencing of the rowing stroke (legs-trunk-arms)
- How to hold the rowing handle
- Basic communication on land and on the water
- Manoeuvering a boat on land and on the water
- How to be safe on the water, what safety gear you need and what to do in case of a flip
- How to read the flow pattern
