Dark Ages Engineering (Morning Only)
Despite the loss of so much knowledge after the fall of the Roman Empire, there were a huge number of engineering innovations that were developed or rediscovered during the Dark Ages. Crossbows, drawbridges, towers, cranes, the compass, and more were reintroduced during those times. All memory of democracy that had developed in ancient times was lost and power was again concentrated in the hands of the feudal lords and ladies in their castle.
Because owning land meant more power, many lords and ladies went to battle with other lords and ladies, trying to take their castle and control their land. This led to many incredible devices being engineered, such as catapults. Your child will join a group to form their own feudal court of lords and ladies. They will try to beat out the other teams in various challenges to show their prowess and be crowned kings and queens of the land with the Engineering for Kids Crown.
In Dark Ages Engineering, your child will explore mechanical and civil engineering. They will build infrastructure for their lands including bridges and towers, construct catapults to lay siege to others, and take part in jousting games. And perhaps their technical developments will set the stage for the renaissance and enlightenment that will surely come again.
MinecraftEDU: Terraformer (afternoons only)
Terraforming is the process of changing a planet so that it is more useful for humans and the other kinds of life that we depend upon. In this camp, your child will pretend to have landed on a planet that is nearly suitable for colonization by Earthlife but it needs a few improvements before the rest of the colonists arrive. How well will your child terraform?
Your child will be immersed in the expansive world of Minecraft, and their ingenuity and problem solving skills will be challenged as they work towards several immense engineering goals. Your child will learn how to use teamwork and manage resources like an engineer in the real world. Building in MinecraftEDU allows students to experiment with designs and materials, all without the risks associated with building structures in reality.
No previous Minecraft experience is needed. We run our custom worlds on our own server so there is no connection to the internet.
