Run by The Harker School Ages 5-11 yrs

June 25-July 6 | July 9-20 | July 23-Aug. 3

Pick Your Passion classes are designed to foster creativity and self-expression by giving campers a chance to explore a single subject of interest. Project-based lessons will include teacher directed instruction, small group learning, and plenty of hands-on activities.

Session A: June 25-July 6

Language Arts

Seuss on the Loose | Grades 1-2
In this wacky, wonderful literature-based class, students will read the works of Dr. Seuss and create projects, stories and creatures of their own. Rhyming patterns, oral reading and creative writing will all be stressed as the children learn about and enjoy the crazy and colorful world of this famous children’s author.

Fantasy & Folk Tales | Grades 2-3
Students will discover exotic places and learn about different cultures through enchanting myths, mystical fairy tales and popular legends. In-class reading and hands-on projects will bring these mysterious places to life! Who knows, there may even be some magical surprises!

Fractured Fairy Tales | Grades 4-5
Do you really believe the story of the three little pigs? Have you heard the wolf’s side of the story in “Little Red Riding Hood”? Many favorite traditional stories have interesting backstories and meanings. Campers will immerse themselves in this intriguing world of fairy tales, comparing the traditional stories with those told from a different point of view.

Science

Concerning Critters: Observations & Classifications | Grade 1
Most children are fascinated with animals – what they eat, how they live and the ways they sense their surroundings. The animal kingdom will be explored through lessons touching upon classification, characteristics, observations, traits and behaviors, life cycles, adaptations and interdependence.

Lights! Shadows! Rainbows! Explorations in the Physics of Light | Grades 2-3
Light is everywhere in our world. We need it to see. But what is light? How does it travel from sun to Earth? Explore the physical properties of light through hands-on labs and investigations with various light sources, translucent materials, reflective materials, refraction tools and solar robots.

Cool Chemistry | Grades 4-5
Students will practice real scientific techniques in the lab while using chemical combinations and other hands-on experiments. Proper lab safety techniques will be stressed, and it is probably a safe bet that we may get a little messy while we learn more about the wonders of the chemical world.

Instrumental | Grade 2-5
Play a musical instrument? Want to have fun playing music with others? Join our Harker summer music camp. All instruments and levels welcome.

Just Sing | Grades 4-5
Join this engaging summer class where we’ll cultivate a love for signing together. You’ll receive instruction in voice and musicianship while participating in a variety of musical activities and games.

Math

Engaging Math | Grade 1
The goal of this class is to bring mathematical concepts to life for students through hands-on experiences. In building a solid foundation in math, we will reinforce already learned skills, as well as introduce new concepts through direct engagement and creative lessons.

Math Extensions | Grades 2-3
This class is set up to review and enrich math skills in an environment that is tailored for individual learning. This class will provide extra reinforcement for the upcoming school year as well as a time for enrichment activities. Students will receive instructions and practice according to their abilities and participate in engaging, fundamental math experiences.

Power Up Math | Grade 4-5
This class is designed to review and strengthen skills of the previous level to assist with a smooth transition into entering the next grade level. There will be opportunities for students to polish their learning skills with lessons in problem-solving, logical thinking and basic operations.

Technology & Art

Tinker Lab | Grades 1-5
Interested in the “maker movement”? Like to “do it yourself”? Campers will be provided with materials and an open environment designed for them to tinker and learn by doing as they brainstorm, invent, design and build their own creations and projects. They will be divided and assisted by age and skill level to maximize their creativity and individual interests!

LEGO WeDo Robotics | Grades 1-3
Using LEGO WeDo robotic sets, students will learn engineering basics with an emphasis on exploration while working with motors, axles, pulleys, gears and more. Snapping alligators, race cars and spinning robots are just a few of the constructions that students will design and program.

Coding Camp | Grades 4-5
Using Tynker, students will learn coding fundamentals in a fun and intuitive way to become a Minecraft modder, a digital storyteller or a game designer. Using this visual programming platform, students will transform their ideas into actual programs.

Artist Studio | Grades 1-5
Aspiring artists will have the opportunity to stretch their creative genius in Harker's great art studio. Projects will allow the campers to experience a variety of art techniques and methods while learning to express their individual creativity.

Sports | Grade 3-5
At Harker sports camps our goal is to provide a fun and exciting sport experience that will increase each camper's knowledge of the sport and individual development. This will be accomplished through fun exercises, drills and modified games that are both challenging and competitive. Focus will be on proper technique and fundamental skills in a positive and nurturing environment.
