Kindergarten French Immersion

Kindergarten French Immersion

One of the goals for this program is to help parents in their decision as to whether or not their child is a good candidate for the public school’s French Immersion program which begins in Senior Kindergarten.

Our program is suitable for children attending full day Junior Kindergarten whose parents are willing to pull them from their afternoon public school class in order to attend our afternoon French Immersion program.

Some children enrolled in French Immersion are just not ready and/or they do not have a natural affinity to other languages. Your child’s Junior Kindergarten year can be spent exploring their ability to handle a full-time French class from Senior Kindergarten onward; while at the same time not missing the opportunity to build on English reading and writing skills during the Junior Kindergarten year should French not be their forte.

Should your child move on to Senior Kindergarten in Public School, they will without a doubt be more prepared and comfortable in a French Immersion setting after their experience with us.

The French Immersion program is age appropriate as the children are introduced to the same curriculum that our regular junior kindergarten program students enjoy….the difference being that French is the language of instruction. Over the school year, the children have the opportunity to acquire fluency in speaking, listening and communicating in French. Should a child not meet with success in this French Immersion setting, we do have English support available to ensure that their Junior Kindergarten year is still productive while keeping the flow of the French Immersion part of the program going for all other students.

Please note the following paragraph from the Ministry of Education’s website stating that as a parent you have the right to withdraw your child from their program for part of the day if you see fit.

If my school offers full-day kindergarten, can I choose to send my child part-time?

Full-day kindergarten is not mandatory. At the schools where full-day kindergarten is offered, parents can choose to remove their child for part of the day if that is what works best for them. Like existing kindergarten programs, parents will continue to have the choice about whether to enrol their four- and five-year-olds in full-day kindergarten. In Ontario, children are required to attend school once they turn six years old.

Some of our families have chosen to withdraw their child from Public School so that their child can enjoy the attention and support that our low 8 to 1 ratio provides in order to prepare them for French Immersion in Senior Kindergarten.
