Join fungi expert, Christian Schwarz, and learn about the wonderful world of mushrooms and how they are so important in the global ecosystem. We'll talk about the weird and wonderful ways they interact with plants, people, and each other. We wil also talk about ways to get started with mushroom identification and reasons why citizen scientists are crucial to the future of mushroom science.
Christian Schwarz has been seriously interested in fungi since he was a teenager in San Diego. The long, dry summers there didn't suit his lifestyle, so he emigrated to Santa Cruz, the land of milk (caps) and honey (mushrooms). His travels so far have taken him all over the United States, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Mexico, and Europe. He is currently in the midst of authoring 'Mushrooms of the Redwood Coast' (a fully illustrated field guide to mushrooms of California) with Noah Siegel, and building a website to document the mycoflora of Santa Cruz County (, and writing for his blog, Notes of a Mycophile (
