The literary arts scene is thriving in the heart of Vancouver, but did you know that South Surrey/White Rock is alive and well, too, when it comes to open mic nights, writing groups and more? If you want to keep your thumb on the pulse of the general arts scene in the area, visit the Semiahmoo Arts website.
We've got the scoop for lit-lovers, in particular, below.
Here are 3 events you MUST attend in South Surrey/White Rock for some literary fun:
1. Word Whips By The Water
Hosted by Pandora's Collective, this free, drop-in writing group meets on the first Wednesday of every month all year-round at the White Rock Public Library at 15342 Buena Vista Ave, White Rock. Show up at 6:30 pm with paper and pen (or laptop) and be prepared to write to prompts presented by the hosts of the evening. The prompt might be a word or a phrase, a piece of art or even an object. You can write fiction or non-fiction, poetry or prose - and go in any direction your pen wants to take you. Sharing is optional but there's no need to be shy in this safe, friendly 'writers-of-all-stages' group! The evening ends at 8 pm. Bring your own beverage.
An annual membership fee of $20 will get you a whole year's worth of comraderie and critiquing experience with the White Rock and South Surrey Writers' Group. They also meet at the White Rock Public Library, on the third Wednesday of each month (except July, August and December) from 7-9 pm to share, listen and critique any works in progress. Sometimes they have literary guests, and they also sponsor a writing contest that you may want to know about. For more information, check out their website or email email@example.com.
3. Zero to 360 Open Mic
Want to skip the writing part and go straight to the reading? Head down to Pelican Rouge at 15142 North Bluff Road, White Rock on the second Thursday of each month for a cup of coffee and great entertainment. If you'd like to sign up to read, be there at 7 pm. Reading start at 7:30 and encompass everything from novels in progress, poetry, short stories, memoir or song lyrics! This is a stage for writers of all experiences (emerging to established). Each writer has 6 minutes to read. If you don't feel like reading and would rather sit back and enjoy the listening experience, you can go right ahead! There's no pressure to read...but who knows? You could be inspired!
Of course, the Surrey Libraries also have their share of literary events so don't forget to check their calendar for something new and inspiring. You never know what you might learn - about yourself and your community - and how you might be motivated to dig a little deeper into your love of words.
