San Francisco, an always-brilliant city, will be even more beautiful in just a few short weeks as holiday cheer spreads through town! From tree light ups, to Christmas carols, to holiday performances, there's so many ways to celebrate the holidays. To help you fill up your calendar this season, we've put together a list of some of the best, most cheerful Christmas events in San Francisco. 

Holiday Ice Skating

When: November 6, 2019 - January 20, 2020
Where: Union Square

A holiday tradition, ice skating in Union Square promises to bring a smile to everyone’s face. Plan your visit to the Safeway Holiday Ice Rink in Union Square presented by Alaska Airlines – the coolest place to be this winter!

ACT's A Christmas Carol: SF Holiday Fave

When: Select dates November 29 to December 23, 2019
Where: ACT's Geary Theater

A Christmas Carol, one of the most well-known holiday stories of all time, comes to the Geary Theater for 21 shows this Christmas. Watch as the Scrooge finds the meaning of Christmas. Make sure you bring some tissues!

30th Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony

When: November 29, 2019
Where: Union Square

The 30th Annual Tree Lighting will take place in Union Square Park between Sutter and Geary streets, and Powell and Stockton Streets. San Francisco's most recognized Christmas tree (80 ft tall with over 30,000 lights) will be lit at the end of the ceremony, around 6:40 p.m.

The Nutcracker Sweet with the Puppet Company

When: November 23 and 24, 2019
Where: Different locations around San Francisco

Presented by the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra and The Puppet Company from Children’s Fairyland, this version of Tchaikovsky’s holiday classic depicts many of the characters from the familiar ballet, including Clara and the Mouse King in the famous climatic fight scene with the Nutcracker.

SF Youth Ballet's 19th Annual Nutcracker Performance

When: December 7 and 6, 2019, at 1:00 p.m. and 5 p.m.
Where: Mercy High School Theatre

Nominated for the Annual Goldstar National Nutcracker Award, the SFYBT celebrates its 19th annual performance. This two-hour program is great for families and is a great opportunity to introduce children to the ballet.

Civic Center Plaza Holiday Tree Lighting

When: December 4, 2019, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Where: SF Civic Center Plaza

Come by for the tree lighting ceremony, featuring musical performances, Santa, a toy giveaway, and the Winter Park Ice Rink! And the SFPD will be hosting a toy giveaway for kids ages 12 and under.

Holiday Crafts Day

When: December 7, 2019
Where: The Randall Museum

Once again, the Randall Museum is hosting its annual Christmas Crafts Day. Kids and their parents are welcome to come and learn how to make decorations for their home. Possible crafts participants can make include learning how to beeswax candles, handmade lip balm, and creating a candy house. Plus, guests can explore new areas of the museum.

Deck the Hall

When: December 8, 2019
Where: Davies Symphony Hall

Enjoy a night of festive carols and sing-alongs with members of the SF Symphony, guest artists, and holiday characters. After the show, enjoy arts and crafts and refreshments. 

Soulful Christmas: A Gospel Holiday Concert

When: December 13 to 22, 2019
Where: The Buriel Clay Theater

Gospel solo artist, Yvonne Cobbs, directs the legendary Lorraine Hansberry Gospel Choir with inspirational holiday music both old and new, sacred and secular. The show is guaranteed to be a roof-raising, hand-clapping, joyful good time for all ages.

Christmas Films with the SF Symphony

It's a Wonderful Life

When: December 3 and 6, 2019
Where: Davies Symphony Hall

Enjoy the class Christmas film "It's a Wonderful Life" while Dimitri Tiomkin's score is performed by a full symphony orchestra. This is a great movie to bring someone who needs a bit of Christmas cheer!

Love Actually

When: December 17 and 18, 2019
Where: Davies Symphony Hall

This is one of the most heart-warming Christmas movies of all time, and it's a lot of fun too! Watch it on the big screen with the SF Symphony Orchestra. 

A Charlie Brown Christmas - Live!

When: December 21 to 23, 2019
Where: Davies Symphony Hall

This classic Christmas story will come to life at Davies Symphony Hall with live actors and an animated backdrop. Plus, the SF Symphony will perform the music, making this an extra-special performance. There will be a family-friendly reception in the festive lobby before the performance, so make sure you get there early!
