December is one of the best months in Omaha, with all of the dazzling lights and family-friendly events happening throughout the holiday season! Each weekend brings exciting holiday happenings to get your family in the spirit, here's a list of ChatterBlock's favorites.
Best Christmas Events for Kids in Omaha 2014
Christmas at the Durham Museum
When: Events happening daily (except Mondays) until January 4th
It's definitely feeling like Christmas at the Durham Museum! They have a great line-up of events that are enjoyable for the entire family throughout the holiday season:
- Christmas at Union Station & Holiday Trees Exhibit - daily from Tuesday-Sundays
- Holiday Concert Series - Enjoy holiday music under the Christmas tree Saturdays & Sundays until Dec 21st
- Family Nights With Santa - Tuesdays from 5-8pm will have reindeer, crafts, and live performances
- Ethnic Holiday Festival - more than 20 local cultural organizations display their crafts, dresses, musicians, dancers, and foods. Friday Dec 5th from 5pm-9pm
- Winter Camps - starting the 22nd will be exhilarating camps for children over the holiday break!
Holiday Lights Festival
When: Daily Until January 4th; 5pm-1am
The Holiday Lights Festival showcases Downtown Omaha and celebrates the spirit of the holidays. More than 40 blocks of dazzling lights will illuminate Downtown Omaha and add that extra shine to each Festival event. Check out the beautiful lights, visit the ice skating rink, and on Saturdays enjoy the sounds of the season from 7-8pm.

Santa's Magic turns Omaha Children's Museum into a magical winter wonderland where a Snow Queen greets you and makes it snow! Snow Queen and Holly the Elf get the little ones ready to meet Santa himself. Professional photos and packages available for purchase. Included with regular museum admission.
Holiday Lights Spectacular at Miracle at Midtown
When: Daily Until January 1st; 7pm
A sight and sound experience, the likes of which Omaha has never seen before, the Holiday Lights Spectacular promises an enthusiastic, choreographed blend of light and seasonal music projected onto the Turner Park side of Midtown Crossing’s condominium buildings. The once nightly show will run approximately 20-minutes, beginning at 7 p.m. The best area to view the show is in the middle of Turner Park, facing west. Parts of the show will be visible from the promenade surrounding the park.
Lights of Aksarben
When: Fridays of December; 6pm-8pm
View the beautiful Lights of Aksarben! Join them in the heated tent located in Stinson Park for free coffee, hot cocoa and cookies and enjoy all of the beautiful lights throughout the Park. There will be music, face painting, and Learning Headquarters will provide a fun activity for the children.
Also check out the Holiday Market at Aksarben Village, happening December 6th & 7th from 10am-5pm. The smells of warm toasted almonds will fill the air!
A Christmas Story the Musical
When: Fridays at 7pm, Saturdays and Sundays at 2pm. Playing Dec 5th-28th. Buy Tickets.
A childhood favourite, A Christmas Story, is back to steal the hearts of the new generation! Join Ralphie Parker on his quest for the Holy Grail of Christmas gifts - a Red Ryder air rifle. This musical adaptation of the beloved movie brings all the classic laughs of Flick getting his tongue stuck to a flagpole, Dad receiving his special award, a disastrous visit to Santa, and many more to life onstage. Bring your family together this winter to experience the universal triumphs of childhood as seen through the eyes of a very special 9-year old. Playing at The Rose Performing Arts, best for ages 5 and up.
Christmas at the Cathedral
When: Friday December 5th at 8pm & Sunday December 7th at 2pm
Join the Cathedral Omaha Symphonic Chorus and the Omaha Symphony Chamber Orchestra at St. Cecilia's Cathedral for the amazing show, Christmas at the Cathedral. Enjoy the sounds of the holidays!
When: Saturdays, December 6th-20th; 10:45am
Catch a glimpse of special holiday characters as they dive into the shark tunnel inside the Suzanne and Walter Scott Aquarium on Saturdays, December 6, 13 and 20, 2014, at 10:45 a.m. Also, Zoo residents will be getting special enrichment gifts throughout the day. These special Holiday Happenings are free to Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium members or with regular paid Zoo admission.
Christmas in the Village
When: Saturday December 6th; Noon-5pm
Christmas in the Village at 24th and Lake has become one of the largest holiday traditions in Omaha, attracting thousands! Activities include musical performances, youth choirs, free carriage rides, nativity scene, petting zoo, games and activities for the kids, face painting, crafts, photos, Santa and Mrs Claus, the list goes on! There will of course also be free hot chocolate, cider, toys, and treats, plus great food available for purchase. Don't miss this one!
Santa Goes to Space!
When: Saturday December 6th; 10am-4pm
The Strategic Air & Space Museum will be hosting an event that combines Space Day and Holiday Air Affair! Santa Goes to Space will be complete with Santa, Stormtroopers, guest speaker, and space-related family activities. Fun for all ages.
Santa Sleigh Ride
When: Saturday December 6th; 10am-2pm (must RSVP)
Ride with Santa on a special sleigh around Hummel Park Nature Center! Enjoy hot cocoa, write a letter to Santa, explore the trails, and other family fun activities! Free! Must RSVP to this event online or at any Community Center.
Wells Fargo Family Festival
When: Sunday December 7th; 12pm-5pm
Wells Fargo presents this year’s Holiday Lights Family Festival, offering the community an opportunity to experience many of Omaha’s leading downtown attractions for free. Included in this festival is:
- Wells Fargo Bank, 20th and Douglas Streets
- Omaha Children’s Museum, 500 South 20th Street
- Omaha Police Mounted Patrol Barn, 615 Leavenworth Street
- The Durham Museum, 801 South 10th Street
- W. Dale Clark Library, 215 South 15th Street
- Joslyn Art Museum, 2200 Dodge Street
Ollie the Trolley will provide free trolley rides between locations. Have fun participating in holiday sing-alongs during your travels!
Every Christmas Story Ever Told (and then some!)
When: Tickets remain for only December 7th at 2pm and December 17th at 7:30pm. Buy Tickets.
They're back! At BlueBarn Theatre,Theresa Sindelar, Ben Beck, and Bill Grennan reprise their hilarious characters in this fast, fond, and furious look at the holiday traditions we all remember, and a few we'd like to forget. Every Christmas Story Ever Told (and then some!) includes all of your favorite characters from Tiny Tim to the Grinch, from Frosty to It's a Wonderful Life.
When: December 13th-14th; Noon-4pm
Fill yourself with holiday cheer with family activities at Lauritzen Garden. Walk through the beautiful poinsettia show in the floral display hall, listen to live holiday music and enjoy holiday food in front of the crackling fireplace in the café. Santa Claus will be available for pictures, and children can make creative holiday crafts for an additional fee of $3 per child.
When: December 17th; 4-5pm
There will be music, dancing, and lighting of the Menorah.This is one of the few Chanukah parades in the Omaha area! Boys Town is one of the stops for the Chanukah Parade, and then the parade will continue through the city of Omaha. Boys Town also has various Christmas events throughout the season (see link).
