Edmonton is a super kid-friendly city, that offers tons of great activities for families! Whether you’re a local or tourist, here’s a look at some of the best activities for kids in Edmonton.
Activities for Kids in Edmonton
West Edmonton Mall
(Of course) we have to mention West Edmonton Mall because not only is it a shopping meca it’s also home to Marine Life, Ice Palace and World Waterpark- all awesome activities for kids in Edmonton. Marine life, an underground aquarium is home to more than 100 species of fish, sharks, sea turtles, penguins, reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates – very cool for the little ones and adults too. World WaterPark is so much fun you can stay literally all day – it’s a massive indoor water park with 17 water slides and the largest wave pool in the WORLD! Check the website for family deals – if you live in Edmonton and visit the mall often it’s more affordable to buy Multi-Play passes which allow you to enjoy all of West Edmonton Mall attractions any time you want, as much as you want.
Art Gallery of Alberta
The Art Gallery of Alberta (AGA) has a wonderful program for kids aged 3-5 called Tours for Tots that provides opportunities for families to explore & connect to exhibitions through exploratory programs focused on play, hands-on art-making and exciting in-gallery experiences. Drop in Wednesday mornings from 10-11 for this awesome program and then stay and tour the gallery some more! AGA also hosts birthday parties – something to keep on your radar.
Telus World of Science
Throughout the year Telus World of Science is a fun and interesting place for kids – to name a few of the cool things for kids that they offer…the permanent Discoveryland exhibit has lots of exciting activities to explore, entice and spark the imagination of young visitors from infancy to 8 years of age. The Space Place is another favorite for kids; dedicated to the coolest of the hottest space subjects, Space Place is all about the thrill of exploring the Wild Black Yonder. Is there life on other planets? Can we protect the Earth from asteroids? What would you look like as an alien? All questions that your little ones might find the answer to at the Telus World of Science.
It’s pretty much winter 5 months a year in Edmonton so you might as well enjoy it! There’s nothing more fun then tobogganing down Edmonton’s awesome hills that are specifically maintained and safety inspected for tobogganing! Here’s where you can find them:
Gallagher Park – 97 Ave. & 92 St
Emily Murphy Park – Emily Murphy Park Rd. & Groat Rd.
Castledowns Park – 153 Ave.
Rundle Park – ACT Hill – 113 Ave.
Government House Park – Groat Rd & River Valley Rd.
Whitemud Park North – Keillor Rd. & Fox Drive
Indoor Pools are an inexpensive and fun option for families looking to get active – especially in the winter when it’s simply too frosty to poke your nose out. Here’s a list of all the Indoor Pools in Edmonton by region so you can find the closest and most convenient one to you!
The Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre’s children’s wing is a great place for indoor play & child-minding throughout the year. The indoor playground is for kids under 10 and is open 8am-8pm daily. I would suggest visiting early or late though because peak play time is between 10-2 (unless of course you want to go to meet friends and other families – then 10-2 is a great time). Things to remember: kids have to wear socks & parent supervision is required.
