Top Spray Parks in Calgary

Looking to cool down this summer? Check out our top picks of spray parks in Calgary.

Summer is getting into full swing and the weather is starting to heat up. If your kids are anything like me, they probably start to get really cranky as the weather gets like this. It’s too hot for them to play outside for a long period of time, but I don’t want to keep them in the air conditioned house all day, because they get bored easily.

I have found that a great way to get my kids outside and keep them active, while also keeping them cool and refreshed, is to take them down to a spray park. I can sit and read a book, while the kids splash around for hours at a time without getting bored.

Calgary has so many spray parks that you can go to a different one every time and the kids never end up getting tired of going to the same ones. Here’s a list of my favourites. Feel free to comment and let me know which ones you like.

Somerset Spray Park

Located in Southwest Calgary, Somerset Park is operated by the Somerset Community Association, but the land is owned by the City of Calgary and so is open for public use.

This is a great spray park, with tons of different, colourful spray features to keep kids busy. It may not be the best for very small children, though, as some of the jets can be a little powerful.

The water operates on a timer that needs to be activated by a button on a post near the steps, and the intensity of the more powerful jets can be adjusted with a small steering wheel nearby.

The park also includes three small playground areas, picnic tables, and washrooms.

Valleyview Splash Park

Valleyview Park is a relatively new park in Southeast Calgary, separating the Dover and Southview communities. As well as a great spray park, the park includes ball diamonds, beach volleyball courts, and playgrounds.

This spray park is ideally suited to smaller children, as it doesn’t have dump buckets or vigorous jets, but rather a number of lighter spray nozzles spread around the edges of the play area.

The spray park is located in a fenced-in compound, along with a small toddlers’ playground, so you can be sure your little ones won’t run off out of sight.

You’ll also find all of the usual facilities, like washrooms, benches, picnic tables, and more.

The newly upgraded spray park is complete with a Discovery Stream, Grassland Collection, Ground Sprays, and Sprout Eco-Activator. Your kids will love running through the showering poppies and playing in the nature themed spray park. The new design is the first of its kind in North America!

Both the wading pool and spray park are open in the summer, which makes Prairie Winds the perfect place to take the entire family during a hot day in the summer.

The park also has a small playground that is idea for small children, a concessions stand, and washrooms.

Head on down the the northwest corner of Calgary to check out Riley Park. This beautiful 9 hectare park is complete with a cricket pitch, wading pool, gardens, playground, and all the other amenities a family would need like washrooms, water fountains, and a concession.

Although RIley Park has a wading pool and not a spray park I thought I would include it on my list as it is one of my family's favourite places to cool off in the summer.

The park is also walking distance from the Kensington shopping area and hold various FREE summer concerts every year.

Butterfly Spray Park in Canmore Park

Canmore Park is located Northwest Calgary and is often referred to as North Capitol Hill Park. The park used to have a small wading pool, but in the interest of safety, hygiene, and water conservation, the city replaced it in 2011 with the all-new Butterfly Spray Park.

As the name implies, the spray park is butterfly-themed and has multiple spray features that are sure to please children of all ages, including light spray nozzles, towers, arches, and much more. The spray area is gated, small, and has high visibility, so you can keep an eye on your little ones at all times.

There’s lots of seating for parents and washrooms nearby. While there’s no playground nearby, there is a large park area with lots of room to run around.

The Day Lodge at the Canmore Nordic Centre offers services such as a cafeteria, meeting rooms, maps and information, day lockers, showers, washrooms, equipment rentals, and lessons.

South Glenmore Park, located in Southwest Calgary is the area surrounding the south side of the Glenmore Reservoir, which includes the Weaselhead Natural Area and has numerous trails and pathways, tennis courts, playgrounds, and the Variety Spray Park.

The play area is notable because it has been specially designed to be accessible to disabled children. This spray park has tons of water features, which makes it a popular spot on sunny days, so be prepared for that. There’s also a small toddlers’ playground, which has ramps to provide wheelchair access.

The park has all the regular amenities, like seasonal bathrooms, and also features numerous cycling trails and a sailing school.
