The August long weekend is approaching. Known locally as Heritage Day and nationally as Civic Holiday, this confusingly named holiday is a great opportunity to enjoy three fun days with the family in the height of summer.

If you are looking for a special way to celebrate this wonderful weekend, here’s a list of all the great events happening throughout Calgary this year. Stay tuned, because we’ll be adding more events as they’re announced..

Family-Friendly Heritage Day Events in Calgary

Heritage Day Festival

Partake in the 37th annual Heritage Day Festival at Olympic Plaza! Come on Monday, August 4 for six hours of multicultural performances, ethnic foods, and unique handicrafts. Explore the Indian Village, get face painted into a lion, frolic on a bouncer, try a new dish, or simply soak up the sun on the grass in front of the stage and enjoy the folk performances!

Heritage Day at Heritage Park

Do more than celebrate our heritage this Heritage Day, live it at Heritage Park!

Music will be celebrated throughout the park with concerts, roving musicians, music themed activities and more. Scheduled to appear with your gate admission are Canadian artists Al Simmons, jocelyn & lisa, Maria Dunn and more! Enjoy a variety of live entertainment, music, activities and games throughout the day.

Be one of the first 500 guests through the gates before 10:30 a.m. and enjoy a complimentary pancake breakfast in Gunn’s Dairy Barn.

Heritage Day with Holly Cole & Guests

Celebrate Heritage Day with Holly Cole & Guests in an evening of live music at Heritage Park Historical Village. This special 50th Anniversary concert under the stars features Juno award winning Canadian songstress Holly Cole, singer, songwriter and poet, Sarah Slean and Canadian country duo, The Stellas. During the evening, guests can enjoy our licensed family barbeque tent!

Proceeds raised will go towards preserving the Park’s priceless collection of buildings and artifacts. This is one of those Calgary concerts that you won’t want to miss.

Inglewood Sunfest

It’s all about having fun in the sun with this year’s Inglewood Sunfest! This year they’ve added more things to see and do, plus they still have all your favorite activities for the whole family. Join in, as the street comes alive with performers, vendors, and fantastic food. Make this the year you start a fun family tradition at the Sunfest! The Inglewood Sunfest is a FREE event so bring all your friends and family down for what will be a beautiful fun summer day!

Millarville Rodeo

Head to the Millarville Rodeo for an unforgettable weekend of western activities and rodeo action. Three memorable days loaded with live music, dancing, rodeo action, family entertainment, beer garden, farmers’ market, local arts & culture, and good old foothills fun.

Calgary International Blues Festival

Get ready for the party of the summer, when Calgary Bluesfest burns it up at Shaw Millenium Park, from July 31 to August 3, when a full week of activities culminates in four days and nights of non-stop, world class blues on the main stage and at the nightly Twilight Blues Series dance parties.

Starring: Award-winning blues master Joe Louis Walker, guitar goddess Ana Popovic; the brilliant Mannish Boys Revue with special guests ‘Monster’ Mike Welch and Sugar Ray Norcia; the legendary Billy Branch and the Sons of Blues; guitar giant and author, record label owner and producer, Bob Margolin, Boogie piano master Kenny “Blues Boss” Wayne; Portland’s swamp groove masters Too Slim and the Taildraggers; International Blues Challenge winner in TWO categories, our very own Tim Williams, and many many more!

Calgary Fringe Festival

While touring Rocky Horror at the Edmonton Fringe Festival, Blair Gallant, the founder of the Calgary Fringe Festival, was struck by the sense of community, understanding and community identity based on tolerance that he experienced while at the festival. And the spark was ignited to create a new cultural identity for Calgary! With a unique blend of artistic and an entrepreneurial commercial background, the foundations were set in place to make the Calgary Fringe a sustainable and culturally open festival.

2014 Alberta Kennel Club Summer Classic

Join the Alberta Kennel Club for the 2014 Summer Classic! The Alberta Kennel Club, an all-breed dog club, was founded in 1904 by a group of sporting dog enthusiasts. It is the one of the oldest continually operated kennel clubs in Canada with a modest membership of 50 dedicated volunteers.

The weekend will feature all-breed championship trials, obedience trials, agility trials, and much more.
