5 of the Best Hikes Near Regina for Families

Published Mar 20, 2020

As a prairie province, most people assume that Saskatchewan doesn't have any good hiking trails - an assumption that is incorrect. The area of southeastern Saskatchewan surrounding Regina has some great trails available, and due to the lack of steep inclines, most of them are family-friendly!

Nicolle Flats Interpretive Area

The Nicolle Flats Interpretive Area is located in the Buffalo Pound Provincial Park, just southeast of the lake. It is a beautiful area filled with tall grass and the sounds of nature. There are 8km of trails to walk through, but it can be an equally perfect spot to sit and read a book in peace (if your kids will allow it).

Wascana Valley

Known by the locals as simply "Wascana Trails", the Wascana Valley is an excellent starting point for families looking to take up hiking near Regina. Only a 20-25km drive from the city, the Wascana Trails also present one of the closest trails to Regina on this list, making it perfect for a spontaneous adventure.

White Butte Trails

Your kids will love this trail for more than just its name. Only a short 20 minute drive east of Regina, there are over 12km of trails open to hikers and cyclists in the summer, and cross-country skiers in the winter. And if you have your furry little friend with you, then you are more than welcome to take them for a walk on the separate pet-friendly 5km trail you'll find in the same area.

Beaver Creek

If you don't mind a bit of a drive, then the Beaver Creek Conservation Area is an excellent destination for a day trip. Located just 13km south of Saskatoon, the Conservation Area is known for its winding trails and its abundance of nature. Bring the kids, but leave the dog at home this time (next time!).

Cranberry Flats

Located a few minutes away from Beaver Creek, the Cranberry Flats Conservation Area is known for its scenic viewpoints, sandy beaches, and its trails. This is also a spot where you can bring your dog, so long as you have them on a leash!
