Staying Inside With Kids During The COVID-19 Outbreak

Published Mar 18, 2020

As we move through this time of uncertainty, it is recommended that we stay inside as much as possible during the COVID-19 outbreak. ChatterBlock has come up with some fun and safe ideas to do with your kids at home during this time.

Coronavirus has quickly been spreading worldwide and in order to keep yourself and your family safe, spending more time in the house is highly recommended.

Some important things to remember:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds
  • If you are feeling sick, stay away from others and call a medical clinic giving notice before you go in
  • Self-quarantine for 14 days if you have travelled abroad
  • Be considerate of your family, friends, and neighbours. We are not running out of food and supplies, so don't buy more than you need in a two week period.

Although this time of uncertainty is most definitely challenging, we will be able to get through it together. As it is recommended to spend more time at home, ChatterBlock has come up with some of our favourite ways to spend the days with your kids while you partake in social-distancing.

1. Read Your Favourite Books

Sit back and enjoy that book you have been waiting to read. You can also get the kids to snuggle up on the couch and choose their favourite books. Challenge them by asking them to read some of the pages out-loud.

2. Find Some Math Workbooks For Your Kids

A lot of kids are already on Spring Break, which is a reason in itself to keep their brains active. There are plenty of online resources to find math problems for your child. You can also even write your own questions for them to solve!

3. Spend The Day Doing Arts And Crafts

My sister and I loved drawing and painting whenever it was a rainy day. Now that many of us will be spending time inside, encourage your kids to bring out their creative side. There are many resources online that can give them inspiration!

4. Teach Your Kids How To Cook

This is the perfect time to teach your kids how you make their favourite meals. Take some time out of your day to talk to them about the importance of eating healthy, balanced dishes. Let them help cut up some of the ingredients, add the spices, and have a blast in the kitchen.

5. Build A Puzzle

Puzzles are always a great way to get your mind focused, while staying entertained for hours. Every Christmas and holiday, my family always spends time together building a puzzle.

6. Allow Every Family Member To Pick a Movie

If your family is the same as mine, agreeing on a movie is nearly IMPOSSIBLE. Now that we have more time in the house, we can let every family member choose a movie.

7. Try Indoor Yoga

Get your stretch on with the kids! Pull out some yoga mats and find a tutorial on YouTube. This is a great way to calm your mind while teaching your kids some new skills.

8. Have A Family Game Night

There are so many games that are great for the entire family to play together. You can check out our article on the best games for a family game night here. This is a great way to spend some quality time together!

9. Bake The Day Away

Bake some cookies or banana bread! You can find simple recipes online that won't take you that long or cause too much of a mess. Teach your kids how to measure the ingredients and have fun while doing it.

10. Build A Blanket Fort

Gather your favourite blankets and pillows and make an awesome fort in the living room! The kids will love having a special place that they can hide in.

11. Have A Lego Building Contest

Get the kids to use their imagination and creativity. Build the biggest and coolest creation you can think of!

12. Watch Old Family Videos

Go back in time and watch some old family videos. It is always so funny watching videos from back in the day.

13. Make Your Own Pizzas

There are some great pizza dough recipes online or in stores. You can cut up some toppings and have everyone make their own. Top it off with watching a movie and you've got the ultimate pizza night.

14. Build An Indoor Obstacle Course

Get your little ones active while having fun! You can put pillows and books on the floor for them to jump over. This will be entertaining for everyone involved.

15. Have A Tea Party

Make your favourite tea and find some cute mugs and a tea pot! Maybe if you're lucky, your kids will even invite their teddy bear's to the party.

16. Make Your Own Slime

18. Learn Cats Cradle

All you need is a long piece of string!

19. Get Moving And Play Freeze Dance

Blast all of your favourite songs and get moving. This is a great way to have fun and feel good while doing it.

20. Have Your Kids Write In A Journal

This is a great thing to get your kids to do. They can draw pictures, write about their day, and get out whatever may be on their mind.

Wake up before the kids do and make a yummy breakfast! You can even make different shapes of pancakes that the kids will love. When I was younger, my dad always made pancakes shaped as the letter of our first name.

23. Have An Indoor Picnic

Let your kids decide what they want to bring on a picnic and set up the whole thing in your house. If you have a patio or backyard, you could even bring a picnic there and enjoy the sunshine.

Hide some sort of treat for the kids and give them clues as to where it is. This is always a really fun activity to do and is sure to keep everyone smiling.
