The Top Tobogganing Hills in Victoria

Published Jan 14, 2020

Well its finally happened... Victoria has gotten its once-a-year "dump" of snow! So bundle up and get out there and make the most of it! Tobogganing is one of my favourite ways, so here's some of the best hills in town.

Time to get outside and embrace the snow - If you can't beat it... might as well join it! Tobogganing is a great way to get the kids out of the house and stay active even during the colder weather. Getting cold and snowy also makes getting cozy by the fire with some hot chocolate feel THAT much better (it's good to look at the bright side- right?).

A few safety things to keep in mind:

  • Wear a helmet
  • Dress properly for the cold
  • Look out for ponds that might be hidden or not completely frozen over
  • Look for any signs prohibiting tobogganing in a specific area

The Best Tobogganing Hills in Victoria

1. Beacon Hill Park

This is a great option because it is super safe with very little/no traffic. It's beautiful for a walk through the park as well with lots of space. Very accessible for those living in the downtown area too.

2. Cedar Hill Golf Course

Cedar Hill Golf Course is another fun option for the kids to go tobogganing. It's well manicured and safe so there is little risk of getting stuck on rocks or branches. Centrally located with a parking area for parents to access as well.

3. Mount Tolmie Park

Mount Tolmie is known for being super steep and rocky but when a nice fluffy blanket of snow hits Victoria, there are some great sledding options for all ages and levels of sledding expertise. Some more thrilling spots for adults and older kids and some gentle hills for the younger kiddos.

4. James Houlihan Park

Deep in Gordon Head, this little gem of a park is secluded and features, a paved walking path and large open field. The park is accessed from both Moonlight Lane and Ferndale Road.

5. Victoria Golf Club

For those who are in the Uplands and Oak Bay areas, Victoria Golf Club is a beautiful spot to take the kids for a snowy adventure! Stroll to the Oak Bay Beach Hotel or some of the other local shops for a hot coco afterwards.

6. Westshore Recreation

The big sloping hill behind the recreation centre is a great option for families in Langford and Colwood. This hill is a known for being a fun spot that kids will enjoy.

7. Rainbow Park

Not only is rainbow park a place to take the toboggan to, there is also a playground and access to the Douglas Street Connector trail along the edge of the park. This is a great area to spend time as a family and enjoy the snowy weather!
