May Guide: The Best Things to Do This Month in Victoria!

Looks like we are finally gearing up for summer in our beautiful city! The cruise ships have docked, festivals are popping up all over the Island, and summer camps are filling up fast. We have put together a list of all our favourite things to do this month so you can focus on the fun part and just show up!

Here is this months list of all the best events and activities to do with your family!

1. Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival

Over nine thousand Victoria-area students of music, dance and dramatic arts are on stages throughout the city receiving adjudications from renowned experts in the arts, for six weeks in April and May.

Daily throughout the Festival, talented young people and adults perform in Brass, Classical Guitar, Choral, Composition, Dance (School and Studio), Ethnic Dance, Fiddle, Musical Theatre, Piano, School Bands, School Orchestras, Speech and Dramatic Arts, Strings, Voice and Woodwinds.

2. Shrek the Musical

Based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film, Shrek The Musical is a Tony Award-winning fairy tale adventure, featuring all new songs from Jeanine Tesori (Thoroughly Modern Millie; Caroline, or Change) and a sidesplitting book by David Lindsay-Abaire. Shrek brings all the beloved characters you know from the film to life on stage and proves there’s more to the story than meets the ears.

3. The James Bay Community Market

Beginning in May you will experience artisan vendors who will showcase their amazing handmade items including pottery, jewellery, hand sewn and knitted clothing and accessories. 

Hungry? You will find prepared food you can eat right on site in the picnic area. They also have a vast array of farm-fresh products from farm-fresh meats to seasonal veggies and fruits.

Along with a unique community shopping experience, live local music by some of the area’s most talented musicians will entertain you throughout the day. There is also a children’s play area and plenty of room to sit and relax or have a bite to eat, while you take in the ambiance of the market.

4. IMBY: In My Back Yard

IMBY is a free, family-friendly, public, interactive arts showcase and weirdness extravaganza in Centennial Square on May 4th, run by the Kindle Arts Society.

Arts projects (mostly stuff that you can touch, climb, taste, listen to, interact with, and feel) and the stage will be going on from 2PM to 10PM, with a fire show! There are no tickets and there is no gate! Drop by when you can!

5. May the 4th Be With You - A Star Wars Roller Disco

Dust off your lightsabres and stormtrooper masks and get ready for the time of your life because this isn't your average costume party! Roller Skate Victoria presents: May the 4th Be With You - A Star Wars Roller Disco!

Featuring Victoria’s DJ Miker playing all your throwback disco favourites on vinyl!

Where: Archie Browning’s Curling Rink in Esquimalt
When: May 4th (OBVIOUSLY) 5-7 pm

6. Buccaneer Days 2019

Get your eye patch and sword ready - it's Pirate time! Come out and celebrate during this historic annual event that has activities for all ages. Stay tuned for more details on the Buc Days pancake breakfast, craft & garden sale and the parade route.

7. Street Party and Garage Sale at Oaklands

The Oaklands Community Association will facilitate a fun-filled, family-friendly day featuring live music by Mufaro Marimba and Bennett's Wet Paint Company, a beer garden at Koffi, food trucks, parklets, and child friendly activities in tandem with the already established Oaklands Garage Sale Day, which hosts over 50 garage sales in the Oaklands area from 9am onwards.

8.  Family Fun Night

Participants will have the opportunity to enjoy a BBQ, live entertainment, games, mascots and lots of local vendors! It is all by donation!

9. Stars on Ice

Canadian excellence in Olympic figure skating continues to shine in the all-new 2019 Stars on Ice tour!

Relive the amazing artistry, excitement and athletic triumph of Canada’s beloved Olympic Team Gold Medalists including Patrick Chan, Kaetlyn Osmond and Meagan Duhamel & Eric Radford; plus two-time Olympic Silver Medalist Elvis Stojko, Olympic Bronze Medalist Jeff Buttle, three-time World Medalists Kaitlyn Weaver & Andrew Poje and more!

10. Luxton Spring Fair

West Coast Amusements, the largest Canadian midway operation in Western Canada is coming to you! Wristbands are only valid on day of purchase. Come to the fair in Langford with your family and enjoy the carnival rides and games.

11. Victoria Highland Games & Celtic Festival 

For 2019, the 156th Victoria Highland Games & Celtic Festival will be the largest in its history with an expanded list of activities and events.

The celebration of Scottish and Celtic music, arts, and culture starts off with a Tartan Parade through downtown Victoria the Saturday before the Games weekend, and includes the tilted kilt pubcrawl, clan torchlight ceremony and a series of performing arts activities.

12. 121st Island Farms Victoria Day Parade

This is Victoria’s largest parade and event, attracting well over 100,000 people. Join in the fun on Monday, May 20, 2019 at 9:00 AM for a multicultural event featuring talented Canadian and American Marching bands, Community and Commercial floats, Cultural performances and many of our local businesses.

Led by the Canadian Forces, this annual event is Free and Fun for the whole family! Don’t forget to join us after the Parade in Centennial Square for “Celebration Square,” a Free Event fun for the whole family! Spend the day in Victoria!

13. Family Fest 

Bring your family to this fun and free community event located at Veterans Memorial Park on the corner of Veterans Memorial and Goldstream Ave. Enjoy 3 amazing inflatables, more than 20 games and arts & crafts booths, prizes, live music by La Familia, face-painting, tea, lemonade, coffee, hamburgers and hot dogs.

14. The Village Block Party (Cook Street Village)

Over 150 businesses, artisans & makers, community groups, and food & beverage vendors, live music on the Main Stage throughout the day, and an all ages licensed area will entertain you and your family in Cook Street Village!

Where: On Cook Street (Oscar St. - Chapman St.)
When: May 26 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM
