April Guide: The Best Events and Activities in Greater Victoria

April is here! Finally it is spring and there are lots of great things to do that aren't limited to staying indoors. We have put together a list of some awesome local events and activity options for parents in Victoria.

April in Victoria is so beautiful. Daffodils and tulips are scattered throughout the city, baby animals are ready to meet you at the Beacon Hill Park petting zoo, and the beaches and playgrounds are starting to look lively. The staff at ChatterBlock have put together a list of all the best things to do this month for you and your family! We hope you get to enjoy the cheerful weather and spend some well deserved quality time with your loved ones.

1. Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival

Over nine thousand Victoria-area students of music, dance and dramatic arts are on stages throughout the city receiving adjudications from renowned experts in the arts, for six weeks in April and May.

Daily throughout the Festival, talented young people and adults perform in Brass, Classical Guitar, Choral, Composition, Dance (School and Studio), Ethnic Dance, Fiddle, Musical Theatre, Piano, School Bands, School Orchestras, Speech and Dramatic Arts, Strings, Voice and Woodwinds.

2. Beacon Hill Children's Farm & Goat Stampede

The Beacon Hill Children's Farm is officially open for the season! Their hours are 10am-4pm daily and their goat stampedes are at 10:10am and 4:10pm every day.

The farm is both educational and economical and is sure to entertain the whole family. Their main goal is to help children develop a respect for animals that will remain with them for life.

Brushing and petting the goats and seeing the pretty peacocks are definite highlights! You'll also find llamas, pigs, a variety of chickens, bunnies, birds and other small friends! Entry is by donation.

3. Embracing the Wild: Gardening with Native Plants

Jay Rastogi, expert gardener and Site Manager at Swan Lake, will explore the many benefits of planting, propagating and harvesting of native plants in your yard this fall. Find out about the benefits to wildlife and water conservation, cultural history, and edibility of many of our local shrubs, wildflowers and trees during this practical 3 hour workshop. An overview of CRD Water Conservation programs will also be provided.

All workshops are free for residents of Greater Victoria, but you must pre-register.

4. Esquimalt 5k with Kids 1k Run

A community-minded 5K open to all ages and abilities. Touted as one of the nicest 5K routes, come and enjoy a beautiful course that takes you through some gorgeous Esquimalt Parks. This is an excellent race to put your training to the test before the spring and summer run series gets into full swing.

Package pick-up and post race activities will be held at the Archie Browning Sports Centre complete with kids zone, prizes, a marketplace and more. Plan to come for the run and stay for the fun!

5. Pro-D Day $2 Skate and $2 Swim

Come to Panorama Recreation Centre for a fun-filled Pro-D day! Bring your family and friends for swimming fun, skating, music, games and prizes. $2 admission.

6. Easter Luncheon

Come to the Cook Street Village Activity Centre for traditional Easter Lunch of Green Salad Starter, Baked Ham with Honey Mustard Glaze, Scalloped Potatoes, Mixed Vegetables and dessert served with coffee and/or tea. Entertainment by Larry Mcquarrie to follow lunch. All ages welcome. Please purchase tickets in advance.

7. Willy Wonka by Four Seasons Musical Theatre

The delicious adventures experienced by Charlie Bucket on his visit to Willy Wonka’s mysterious chocolate factory light up the stage in this captivating adaptation of Roald Dahl’s fantastical tale. Featuring the enchanting songs from the 1971 film starring Gene Wilder and songs by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley, Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka is a scrumdidilyumptious musical guaranteed to delight everyone’s sweet tooth.

8. Free Kids DIY Workshops at Home Depot

The Home Depot offers free workshops for do-it-yourselfers of all ages and experience levels. If you are looking for a fun activity to do with the family, they have got a great workshop for kids that will teach them about building.

Kids can learn how to build their very own birdhouse! The workshop is free, but you must pre-register to reserve your spot.

Awesome Easter Weekend Activities:

    9. Easter Egg Hunt at Kindergym

    Come hunt for Easter eggs with all the kiddos at Greenglade Community Centre! Limited space available and regular admission rates apply.

    When: April 18, 9:30am-11:30am

    10. Easter at the Market

    Come on down for a fun filled family Easter event at the Market! On Friday April 19th from 11:00am to 2:00pm there will be a FREE Easter event featuring a chocolate egg Easter Egg Hunt, live music by VINYL WAVE, Balloon Twisting, and a Free Photobooth by Mr Booth Photo Experiences!

    Note: Easter Egg Hunt will be in the style of Halloween Trick or Treating where kids are welcome to bring their Easter baskets and collect chocolate eggs from each of the vendors in the Market.

    11. Kidzone Easter Egg Hunt

    Children Grade 5 and younger are invited to an Easter Egg Hunt! Rain or shine - there are indoor and outdoor options available. Bring your own basket for this awesome FREE event.

    There will be a sensory space with Easter grass and some plastic eggs available babes and toddlers can play with if you have kids under one who would like to have some fun!

    12. Easter Eggstravaganza at Oaklands

    On Saturday, April 20 come to the annual Easter Eggstravaganza! This sell out event features an outdoor Easter egg hunt on the grounds of the Oaklands Community Centre, children’s crafts and activities, and a visit from the Easter Bunny!

    13. 30th Annual TC 10k

    The Times Colonist 10K is entering its 30th year in operation. Come join over 8,000 walkers and runners in a celebration of healthy living, sport and the Victoria community on April 28th. Enter the 10k or Thrifty Foods Family Run. It's fun for the entire family and will feature a weekend of things to do!
