Discover the best things to do with kids this September around Calgary!

As the kiddos head back to school and as the days get shorter and the air crisper, there is certainly no end to all the fun going on around this city!

Here we highlight the major can't-miss events, but you can also visit our full calendar of events for a snapshot of everything that's happening around Calgary.


1. BBQ On The Bow

The annual outdoor festival and BBQ competition that happens every Labour Day weekend! There will be a variety of food trucks (many are BBQ style but other options too), a marketplace, kids zone with a children's playground and face painting, beer garden, and a great line up a live music!

When: September 1st & 2nd, Sat hours 11am-8:30pm, Sun hours 11am-6:40pm

2. Calgary Pride Parade & Festival


It’s the most colourful event of the year! Watch the colourful floats and boogie to music for the Pride Parade, then check out the festival afterwards. The Calgary Pride Festival aims to be a welcoming and family-friendly space for all attendees, and one of the big attractions is the Shell Family Zone! With plenty of crafts, activities and performances throughout the day, kids of all ages will find something for them!

When: Parade is Sunday Sept 2nd at 11am-1pm, the festival goes till 6pm
Where: Parade route starts at 350 6 Ave SE and follows along 6 Ave, turning right onto 6 St SW and ending at Prince's Island Park where the festival takes place

3. Movie in the Park


Grab your blankets, your kids, and maybe some friends to watch an outdoor movie in the park. The movie begins at sunset (so we say roughly 8pm) and by poll the screening will be the 1987 classic, The Princess Bride.

4. This Girl Can YYC

This Girl Can YYC Expo has been created by two mothers of tween girls, it is an all girls expo for young women ages 5 and up. This Girl Can is a day of empowerment and knowledge building featuring Health and Wellness, Sports Activities, Fashion, Arts and Design, Science and Technology, Safety and Support. There will also be complimentary hip hop, spin and yoga classes along with qualified professionals speaking on bullying, anxiety, social media and girls in technology.

When: Saturday Sept 8th from 10am - 5pm

5. Circle Carnival

One of the most anticipated events of the month with a diverse collection of local and international musicians and dancers, scheduled on three different stages for 10 solid hours of non-stop, jam-packed fun. PLUS, it's perfect for families. A very reasonable price and tons of kids activities like circus school, giant inflatables, 30,000 ball pit, circus performers, lego land, dog dash, market, and more.

When: Saturday Sept 8th from 11am - 11pm

6. Calgary Food Fest

Enjoy the live entertainment and tastes from over 12 food trucks, mixed with a market, fun inflatables for the kids, mascots, and more. Proceeds will go to Sonshine Community Services, helping women and children transform their lives.

7. Inglewood Night Market


The final weekend of the popular Inglewood Night Market, and to celebrate the end to their summer season they're doing a back-to-back Friday and Saturday! With over 50 local vendors, food trucks, live music and entertainment, you'll want to make it out the final hurrah.

When: Friday & Saturday Sept 14th - 15th from 5pm - 11pm

8. Beakerhead

This truly unique event is a five-day citywide spectacle with more than 60 events centred around delightfully bizarre engineered installations and artworks. My favourite part of their website is "Who should attend? Everyone! It doesn't get any more inclusive than this. Social and cultural barriers, be gone."

One of the most popular events is Beakernight, which is only $8 a ticket and free for 14 and under, on Saturday Sept 22nd.

9. Kiwanis Apple Festival

Apple-themed family fun with bouncy castle, face painting, games, farmers' market, live entertainment, silent auction & more! Net revenue supports the operation of Kamp Kiwanis, a summer camp for underprivileged children.

When: September 22nd - 23rd from 10am - 4pm

10. Granary Road AppleFest

Another apple-icious time! Visit for apple-inspired products, pies, food, and more. You can also spend time exploring the petting zoo, trails, educational exhibits, and the Active Learning Park with one-of-a-kind play structures that will leave the kids in awe.

When: September 22nd - 23rd from 9am - 5:30pm

11. International Balloon Festival


It's a bird, it's a plane, it's the Balloon Festival! Make the 45 minute drive to High River for this totally worth it event, where more than a dozen hot air balloons gather for 5 days of competition. You can just view as a spectator throughout the day, or there are rides offered for a fee, and then Glow Night (pictured above) has them all gathered in a field and glowing in the night sky. This way you can see them up close and personal and there's food trucks for you to grab dinner or snacks.

When: Friday Sept 28th at 5pm is Balloon Glow Night

12. Alberta Culture Days

A movement to raise awareness, accessibility, participation and engagement of all Canadians in the arts and cultural life of their communities. The goal is to celebrate our arts, heritage and cultural diversity through hundreds of events that take place across the province. There's all kinds of events put on by local businesses from fairs to dance to button making.

When: September 28th - 30th

13. Calgary Baby & Tot Show

A premier parenting event designed to put everything you need under one roof. Featuring local and national exhibitors showcasing the latest in apparel, services, products and toys to assist parents and caregivers every step of the way. Join industry experts with educational presentations discussing everything from pregnancy to preschool! Interactive play areas, arts and crafts and ongoing entertainment for the whole family.

When: September 29th - 30th

14. Calgary Corn Maze


Visit the corn maze and experience life on a farm. Get lost and eventually found as you navigate your way through over 13 acres of corn mazes, mingle with friendly barnyard animals at the petting zoo, play a round of mini golf, climb our ropes course, ride the ziplines, bounce on the jumping pillows, ride the train, shoot it up with your friends at our wild west paintball shooting gallery, and more. Throughout September they also have special events like Flashlight Nights on Fridays and Saturdays (starting September 21st).
