Here's everything you need to know for August 2018 in Greater Victoria. From the Symphony Splash, to free outdoor movies, to cool & unique festivals, these are things to do that the entire family will enjoy.

I. Love. Victoria.

And Victoria in August is absolutely no exception! How could it be, with all the amazing community events, free entertainment, and high flying shows?

Here we highlight the major annual events, but you can also visit our full calendar of events for a snapshot of everything that's happening around Victoria, Saanich, Sidney, Westshore, and beyond.

Now, the line up of the biggest August events you need to know about (all family friendly).

1. Symphony Splash


Start the month with a bang (literally)! Symphony Splash is one of the most popular events in Victoria. Gather at the inner harbour by foot, kayak, or boat and watch the spectacular free concert by Victoria Symphony. As the sky darkens the music builds, and as it reaches its crescendo the cannons explode and the sky erupts into fireworks! To get a good spot you'll want to get there early, but not to fear, there is the Splash Family Zone in front of the Empress Hotel to keep the kiddos preoccupied from 1-4pm with a bouncy castle, games, face painting, crafts, and more.

When: Sunday August 5th with activities from 1pm-10pm

2. Victoria Dragon Boat Festival


Check out the exciting dragon boat races, right in Victoria’s downtown Inner Harbour! Teams race 470m from Laurel Point towards the Empress Hotel, in an intense display of strength and teamwork. You can also enjoy live bands at the FREE Outdoor Stage! This year's entertainment stage is bigger and better than ever, with popular local bands like The New Souls, Younger Than Yesterday, and The Soul Shakers. Enjoy the sunshine, drinks, and all in a family-friendly environment.

When: August 10th-12th, entertainment starting at 2pm daily

3. Aeriosa: Dancing Trees by the Salish Sea


Aeriosa returns to Saxe Point Park for a second year with a new program Dancing Trees by the Salish Sea! Come marvel at the athletic grace and strength of these aerial dancers and be welcomed to the land by the Lekwungen Dancers at the start of each show.

When: Friday & Saturday August 10-11th with shows at 6:30pm and 7:30pm

4. Star Gazing at Fort Rodd hill


Escape the city lights and enjoy the stars from within the walls of Fort Rodd Hill. Join Parks Canada staff and local experts from the Royal Astronomical Society for a night of astronomy and galaxy exploration. Peak through large telescopes and witness this year’s Perseid Meteor Shower. Take part in special presentations, participate in hands-on activities and join a night photography tutorial.

When: Friday August 10th at 8pm
Where: Fort Rodd Hill & Fisgard Lighthouse National Historic Sites
Price: $3.90 Adults | $3.40 Seniors | Free 17 & Under

5. Victoria's Largest Little Airshow


Pilots from all over BC and the US will be entertaining you with their scale models, WW1 and WW2 aircrafts, aerobatics and even turbine jets! If you can tear your eyes away from the flying you can also enjoy huge static displays, kids activities, concession, and raffles. Bring your lawn chairs! 

When: Saturday & Sunday August 11th-12th from 10am-4:30pm

6. Cadboro Bay Festival


Enjoy an afternoon at the picturesque Gyro Park with a variety of hands-on activities, bouncy castles, live music, arts and craft stations, food, and fun for the entire family. You can watch world-class sand sculptors create giant works of art using just sand, water and a whole lot of creativity!

When: Sunday August 12th from 11am-3pm
Where: Cadboro Bay Beach & Gyro Park

7. Downtown Victoria Buskers Festival


Close out the month with the free five day family-friendly festival showcasing all of the quirky and unique street talent from around the world! Scattered throughout downtown Victoria is "Pitch Stops" where you can watch some of the world's best buskers perform stunts, comedy shows, magic, and more.

When: August 30 - September 3 all day
Where: Various pit stops in the downtown core
Price: Free to attend and pay what you think the performer deserves

8. Fireworks at Butchart Gardens


Every Saturday throughout the month you can experience a jaw-dropping firework show in the renowned Butchart Gardens. Fireworks begin at dusk but arrive early to lay down a blanket in the viewing area and then walk through the beautiful gardens. There's live music on the lawn, carousel rides, and lots of tasty treats to keep everyone happy.

9. Free Outdoor Movies

While July brought quite the line up, there's still plenty more to look forward to. Bring your friends, bring your family, bring your blankets, and watch a film under the stars.
