What you need to know to get ready for the giant pandas at the Calgary Zoo

All your family needs to know about the giant pandas at the Calgary Zoo

The pandas are coming! The pandas are coming! The pandas are coming! In just a few short weeks, you can meet Calgary’s newest residents: four adorable giant pandas. It’s been a long time since The Calgary Zoo has hosted giant pandas (30 years to be exact!), so we’ve compiled a handy list of information to make sure you are ready for the pandas.

 1. Members see the pandas first.

The pandas’ new home, Panda Passage, will open to the public on May 7, but Calgary Zoo Engage and Inspire members get a full week of previews and will see these majestic and rare animals first!

 2. Pandas grow up quick.

Giant pandas are considered fully grown at just four years old. Jia Panpan and Jia Yueyue will be about 2.5 years old when they arrive, so you’ll want to visit them early and often to watch them transition from juvenile cubs to full grown bears.

3. Giant pandas need your help.

Giant pandas were removed from the endangered species list thanks to extensive recovery efforts, but they are still a vulnerable species that needs help. By purchasing a ticket or membership to the Calgary Zoo, you are helping to support giant panda research projects, furthering the conservation and recovery of giant pandas in the wild.

With less than 2,000 giant pandas left in the world, we are very fortunate and excited to be able to welcome four giant pandas to Calgary.

4. Pandas are good for your health.

A study from Indiana University found that watching cute things can actually boost energy and reduce stress. So, if  you want to brighten someone’s day, a visit to the Calgary Zoo may be just what the doctor ordered. Be prepared to succumb to these overwhelmingly adorable and irresistibly playful creatures.

5. Parties, discounts, free Easter activities and more!

While we still have a few weeks to go before you can visit the pandas, there are hundreds of other animals at the Calgary Zoo that you can visit right now! Plus, there are special events coming up that you can enjoy, like Easter Eggstravaganza, happening March 30-31. Bring your family and enjoy face painting, sweet treats, bunny races, cookie decorating and more.

There’s so much to do at the Calgary Zoo all year round, and members get the added benefit of enjoying VIP previews, amazing discounts and more!
