As fall approaches, the question looming is where to get the perfect pumpkin in our fine city? Many of the local farms start to sell their u-pick pumpkins towards the beginning of October but it varies each season.
Sure you could go to Thrifty Foods and pick a few out of the bin, OR you could have a slightly more authentic and exciting experience by visiting one of the local pumpkin patches Victoria has to offer! Here’s a few of our faves to get you started on your hunt…
Pumpkin Patches In & Around Victoria:
Galey Farms Pumpkinfest is a great time for the whole family and a perfect time to pick your pumpkin! Featuring live entertainment, face painting, kids games, hay rides, u-pick pumpkins, train rides, corn maze, playground, petting farm, children’s haunted house and fantastic seasonal displays. Galey Farms and fall basically go hand-in-hand for locals.
At the Michell Bros Farm on Island View Road, you can pick your own pumpkin and load up on lots of other fresh local eats like blackberries, blueberries, and local eggs. If you are picking up someone from the airport or ferry, we suggest going a few hours early and making an event out of the commute! The market’s open 8:30-5:30, 7 days a week.
Known for their gigantic corn maze, Pendray Farms also have a pumpkin patch filled with pumpkins perfect for carving, or gnarly warty ones that are fun decor. Your kids will love the scavenger hunt through the maze, the tasty popcorn they make fresh, and the "corn box" kids can play in (sand boxes are so last year). Located in North Saanich at 9537 West Saanich Rd and open Thursdays & Fridays 2pm- 9pm and Saturdays & Sundays 10am- 9pm.
While not as large and mainstream as the above, traditionally they have U-Pick Pumpkins from the “Children’s Patch” at Mar Farms located at 7120 Veyaness Road, Saanichton. They have been undergoing some changes, but appear to be open Fri-Sun 9-5:30 and have lots of bright pumpkins for the pickin’! We will keep this updated as we learn more about their 2017 plans.
Again, no mazes and hay rides here, but if you are in Central Saanich we highly suggest stopping by Silver Rill Corn to get pickin’. On top of tons of bright orange pumpkins the market is also loaded with corn and other awesome produce. Arguably, this is the best corn in town. Silver Rill is located at 7117 Central Saanich Road and are open from 9am - 5pm every day of the week!
If you are up for a drive, this family-friendly farm has a 7 acre corn maze, huge pumpkin patch, and hayrides about 1.5 hours from Victoria. Make a day of it stopping along the way, and then once you're there you can hop on the hay wagon for a ride to the pumpkin patch and take your time selecting the perfect one. McNab's Farm is open 7 days a week from 10am till dusk and located at 4613 Yellow Point Road.
