For their 12th season, Ballet Victoria is bringing passionate dance, inspiring music, and spell binding stories to the stage with their holiday performance of The Gift. Jovita Ballet Victoria’s Production Manager, tells us a bit more about the amazing holiday performance…
Question 1: Hi Jovita, please tell us a bit about your coming holiday performance?
On December 28 and 29, we will be performing our second annual holiday performance The Gift. The show tells the story of young Pandora who cannot wait until Christmas Day to open a mysterious present that her uncle brought back from his travels. When she opens the gift, she meets characters from all around the world. Initially frightened by them, she learns to understand and respect their differences, befriending them in the process. Out of the box also comes Hope, a beautiful allegorical dancer that helps Pandora understand her fears and restore order.
Question 2: Sounds wonderful! Is The Gift appropriate for children? And if so what ages?
Well, since this is a holiday performance, it is great for children of all ages. Unlike our other season performance, this one will feature a number of younger dancers. If you love the Nutcracker scores, this is not a show to be missed! This year, The Gift will be performed with live music by Joey Pietraroia and The Victoria Symphony.
Question 3: Are your dancers local or international?
All of our main dancers are local except for one who is from Japan. We also have 3 aspirants in the company this year and they are all from Japan also.
Question 4: Lovely! Will there be any opportunities over the holidays to meet the ballerinas?
Of course! At The Gift, children will have the opportunity to meet the dancers and take pictures with them. What a lot of people don’t know is that the public is welcome to come to Ballet Victoria’s studio to watch rehearsals. The show rehearsals are usually in the afternoon, so call the office at 250.380.6063 and tell them you’d like to come watch.
Question 5: Oh wow, I didn’t know that! Thanks for the tip. What do kids love most about seeing the Ballet?
Kids love the costumes! There’s nothing that fascinates them more than beautiful costumes. If there’s music they recognize, they also like that. That’s why our holiday performance is one of our most popular one, because it is all about fancy sparkly costumes and Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker music.
Question 6: So true! How much are tickets for The Gift?
For The Gift, we have a $15 price for children 12 and under. Adult pricing varies from $40 to $60. We also offer student and senior discount. You can visit www.balletvictoria.ca for more details.
Question 7: I hear Ballet Victoria is running a contest again, can you tell us more about it?
Yes, we will also be doing a draw for fabulous prizes at each performance. You could be the lucky recipient of round trip airfare to Vancouver by Harbour Air or a beautiful Pandora bracelet. Just purchase one or more tickets to the show and be present in the audience for your chance to win!
Question 8: Why do you think it’s important that kids and families support the performing arts in our local community?
First of all, I think it is always great for children to be exposed to the arts so they grow up to have appreciation for it. The performing arts community here in Victoria supports many other organizations and charities. We are all linked in a way. Ballet Victoria recently donated 100 tickets to Santa’s Anonymous so that children who aren’t able to buy tickets have the opportunity to enjoy a ballet performance. We also regularly donate tickets to support fundraisers in the community. Without the loyalty of our audience, we wouldn’t be able to do our part for the community.
