Kids Christmas Events in Sacramento 2019

Christmas is approaching, and like Santa, there is a lot for us to do! But where are all the fun events? Here's a list of some of the most cheerful Christmas events taking place in the city. 

Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony 

When: November 27, 2019
Where: Theatre of Lights

Come down to the Old Sacramento Waterfront and kick off the holiday season with the annual lighting of the tree ceremony. The festivities begin at 5 p.m. with live entertainment, and after the tree lighting, watch the live dramatization of "'Twas the Night Before Christmas." And don't miss the special appearance by Jack Frost!

Magical Christmas Train

When: Select days in November and December 2019
Where: Boarding at 400 North Harbor Boulevard

All aboard! Enjoy a one-of-a-kind train ride through a storybook wonderland. The Magical Christmas Train experience includes stories, carols, reindeer games, cookies, hot chocolate, and a visit with Santa. Guests are welcome to dress in their Christmas pajamas. There's never a dull moment aboard the Magical Christmas Train. 

Wild Nights and Holiday Lights

When: December 6, 7, 13 to 23, and 26 to 30, 2019
Where: Folsom Zoo Sanctuary 

Visit the Folsom Zoo Sanctuary one night this December to experience the park brightly lit and decorated. Lighted animal figures and local caroling groups and musicians transform the zoo sanctuary into a magical experience. Santa will make a special appearance every night up to December 23. Plus, the the Folsom Valley Railway miniature steam train will run special nighttime rides.

Santa's Whilstlestop Adventure

When: December 7, 8, 14, 15, 21, and 22, 2019
Where: Placerville & Sacremento Valley Railroad

Take a short trip to Santa’s Whistlestop, nestled in the woods next to beautiful Willow Creek. You'll get to spend some time with Santa and participate in various activities. Motorcars depart about every 20 minutes, so you can return whenever you like. This event boards at Oak Avenue Whistlestop, which is located at 700 Oak Avenue Parkway near California Family Fitness.

41st Annual Holiday Show of Hands Craft Fair

When: December 6 to 8, 2019
Where: St. John’s the Evangelist School

Join the fun at the 41st annual Holiday Show of Hands, an arts and crafts Christmas sale featuring custom work by over 150 craftsmen and artists! This year features include a silent auction, a Man Cave, and the Beaty Boutique. Bring a pair of socks to donate to those in need.

Winter Wonderland Holiday Skate Party

When: December 6, 2019
Where: SkateTown Ice Arena

Get ready to ice skate all night long! Enjoy games, prizes, Christmas songs, a live DJ, awesome laser light shows, black and disco lights, and a pile of snow to play in. This is a family-friendly event, so everyone is welcome.


Sacramento Zoo Holiday Magic

When: December 14, 2019
Where: Sacramento Zoo

Bundle up the family and come enjoy the holiday season at Holiday Magic! The highlight of the day is watching the animals receive special holiday treats. Yum! The staff will also be on hand to share facts, secrets, and answer your questions. Plus, get free photos with Santa!

Winter Wonderland

When: December 14, 15, 21, and 22, 2019
Where: Fairytale Town

Celebrate the holiday season at Fairytale Town with festive décor and a dazzling display of lights! Visit with Santa in his workshop, experience a flurry of snow falling nightly, and enjoy Charlie Brown-themed hands-on activities!


Santa Parade

When: December 14, 2019
Where: Downtown Sacramento

Come out and enjoy Sacramento's traditional holiday parade! This year marks the 37th Santa Parade. It will feature marching bands, clowns, youth groups, horses, and, of course, the jolly man himself! 


Downtown Sacramento Ice Rink

When: November 1, 2019, to January 20, 2020
Where: Downtown Sacramento at St. Rose of Lima

Last but not least is one of our favorite holiday activities in the city. The downtown Sacramento Ice Rink is open daily. Check their website as hours and pricing vary.
