ZOOLIGHTS with your Family this Christmas

Published Nov 30, 2017 | Updated Feb 19, 2020

Learn about one of Calgary's must-do Christmas attractions.

With the holidays fast approaching it feels like the perfect time to spend bundled up with your family or loved ones looking at Christmas lights. Calgary has a ton of beautiful light displays, however it is difficult to top ZOOLIGHTS at the Calgary Zoo. With over 1.5 million Christmas lights, 200 light figurines, and a variety of interactive and choreographed light displays, there is no question that your family will leave ZOOLIGHTS in the Christmas spirit.

In celebration of ZOOLIGHTS being a household holiday tradition for its 20th year, the displays are bigger and better than before. Not to mention there are lots of fun indoor and outdoor activities to enjoy in all weather.

To prepare Calgarians for their next trip (or maybe even their first trip) to ZOOLIGHTS we’ve created a little cheat sheet to help everyone keep cozy and experience ZOOLIGHTS to its full potential.

Skate Under the Lights

Many visitors are also unaware that there is a skating rink at ZOOLIGHTS, which is beautifully decorated under a canopy of Christmas lights. Feel free to bring your own skates, or take advantage of the free skate rentals (courtesy of KidSport Calgary).

Pro Tip: Every Friday and Saturday night there will be a DJ at the skating rink to keep the party alive.

Photo Opportunity

Rumour has it that Santa Claus and the Mad Hatter himself visit ZOOLIGHTS from time to time. If parents have a camera handy they are welcome to snap a free photo of the big man himself from now until the 23rd of December.

Indoor Activities

We live in Calgary after all, so just in case the weather is a little too brisk there are also many activities to do indoors. For example, your family will find games on migration, hibernation, and adaptation to teach you about conservation and animal behaviours in a sparkling fashion.

Smile and have Fun

Last but not least the most important thing to remember while visiting ZOOLIGHTS is to smile and have fun! It’s the holiday season after all.
