The Best Beaches in Ottawa for Kids

Are you always looking for fun and free ways of keeping your kids cool during the dog days of summer? Luckily, Ottawa has a surprising number of amazing family friendly beaches for you to check out this summer. So grab your sunscreen and get outside!


 



Britannia Beach


Location: On the Ottawa River at Britannia Bay

This is the spot to go when the whole family is need of a little rest and relaxation. We think Britannia Beach is one of the best in the city for a variety of reasons - it has a fantastic picnic area, there are tons of shaded spots, and there are always sailboats drifting past on the horizon. Pretty perfect, eh?

 

An added bonus is that there are lifeguards on duty, washrooms, a canteen, free parking, outdoors showers to rinse off,  and an on-site playground for your wee ones to run around in.


 



 

Lac Philippe (Brenton Beach)


Location: A short 20 minute drive outside of the city centre in Gatineau Park

Who can argue with two beautiful sandy beaches, outdoor barbecues, and a canteen? If you and your family are looking for a scenic spot to take a day trip Lac Philippe is your best bet.

 

Other highlights of the park include ample shaded trails go for fun walks as a family, washrooms, parking (paid) and lifeguards for increased safety.





 

Mooney’s Bay Beach


Location: 2926 Riverside Drive

Mooney’s Bay Beach is another great beach to take your kids to this summer. The beach is located in one of Ottawa’s public parks. Amenities besides the sandy beach include a picnic areas, playground, biking paths, indoor changing rooms, washrooms and has lifeguards on duty.

 

Additionally, during the summer you can also rent volleyball nets and stand-up paddleboards. How fun is that?

 




 

Petrie Island  


Location: in Orleans (727 Trim Road)

There are 2 great public beaches on Petrie Island for your family to choose from. Both of these beaches are owned by the city and have lifeguards on duty.

 

Petrie Island is a great spot for kids because of all the on-site amenities. These include: changing rooms, water fountains, parking (paid) public washrooms and a snack bar!

 

 



 

Westboro Beach


Location: Kitchissippi Lockout (745 Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway)

For a more quaint option, bring the family out to Westboro Beach. Located on the Ottawa River this beautiful beach is complete with on-site lifeguards, plenty of trees for shade, a canteen, changing rooms, washrooms, free parking, nearby trails, and even a swimming lane.

 

Westboro Beach is the perfect spot to just get away from it all and enjoy nature!
