Summer is getting into full swing and the weather is starting to heat up. If your kids are anything like me, they probably start to get really cranky as the weather gets like this. It’s too hot for them to play outside for a long period of time, but I don’t want to keep them in the air conditioned house all day, because they get bored easily.
I have found that a great way to get kids outside and keep them active, while also keeping them cool and refreshed, is to take them down to a spray pad. I can sit and read a book, while the kids splash around for hours at a time without getting bored.
Winnipeg has so many spray pads that you can go to a different one every time and the kids never end up getting tired of going to the same ones. As of May 20th, all spray pads are open for season!
Here’s a list of my favourites. Feel free to comment and let me know which ones you like.
Located right in the heart of downtown Winnipeg is the Central Park Spray Pad. After a recent revitalization Central Park is now complete with a large aquatic play pad (nearly 8,600 sq.ft) and wading pool.
Some stand out features of the spray pad include the island with ground sprays, the super tall Daisy May columns, and who could forget the water canyons.
Address: 400 Cumberland Ave
A newer additional to the Winnipeg spray pad scene is the Gateway Recreation Spray Pad. Although this pad is less than 2 years old it is already becoming a quick family favourite in the Peg.
A distinguishing feature of the spray pad includes hockey-stick shaped sprinklers! How Canadian is that!?
On top of that there are a ton of cute and colourful sprinklers and sprayers for your kids to cool off in.
1717 Gateway Rd.
Washrooms: Available in Community Centre
Right next to a summertime staple (the Kildonan Park Pool) is the new 21-feature splash pad. If you or your kids don't feel like diving into the deep end this is a great alternative to keep cool this summer.
In addition to the pool and spray pad there is also a sweet play structure just a few steps away and a large shady park that your family can spend the day hanging out in.
*Please note the outdoor pool opens for season on Friday, June 16, 2017.
Address: 2015 Main Street
One of our favourite spray pads in Winnipeg has to be the Variety Heritage Adventure Park. Here surrounded by one of the coolest playgrounds in the city is the "Metropolis".
The Metropolis encourages learning by using elements of Winnipeg's history in the splash pads design. Long story short your kids will love running around this colourful spray pad and playing in in the play structure near by.
Address: 75 Forks Market Rd.
Another great splash pad in Winnipeg is the Waverly Heights Community Centre.
This city of Winnipeg spray pad has a slightly different theme, which includes giant soccer balls, baseballs, and rings to run through. So, if you want your kids to have a ball this could be your best shot.
Address: 1885 Chancellor Dr.
Washrooms: Available at Community Centre
