5 Handmade Gifts Your Kids Will Love

Published May 16, 2017 | Updated Feb 19, 2020

Here are 5 handmade gifts you can make for your children that they will love and cherish for years to come

Many a child has gotten a toy or game that looked so fun in a commercial only to discover it's not the toy or game itself that is so fun, but the group of children that were playing with it. Many a parent has parted ways on many occasions with $100 or more for a much desired toy or game, only to see it slowly collect dust after only an hour or of use. There, are, however a wide range of handmade gifts you can still make for your kids that they will love. In fact, you can probably save yourself a lot of time, money and frustration by making them something rather than buying them something. Here are the ideas of 5 such things you can create for your childrenĀ

1. Personalized Book

Kids love things that are personalized just for them. Whether it's a keyring, pens or a t-shirts with their name on them or a character with their same name, kids love things they think were made just for them- and even more so if it really is.

There is perhaps no gift more special than a book created just for them. If you are good at either writing or drawing, you can write a story about them and find a good artist to illustrate it or you can have someone else write a story and you can illustrate it. There are a number of printers that will bind the book in a wide variety of ways.

You can also create a memory book filled with unique facts about them or pictures of special events that may have happened before they were old enough to remember. You may create a book about your family and include some interesting facts about their relatives that they may not know. Whatever you create, your child will love it, if it is created just for them.

2. Picture/Memory Quilt

Special or important pictures can be screen printed onto fabric and turned into a quilt made just for them. You can also use fabrics from important events in their life, such as a receiving blanket, the blanket they loved most well into toddlerhood or the clothing they were baptized in. Just like creating a book made just for them, a quilt made from important pieces of fabric from their earliest days will be a cherished gift that they can actually use.

3. Furniture

Kids love kid-sized things and furniture is no exception. Even better is when the furniture is made or created just for them. Whether it's painting a bed frame and headboard in a colour they love, complete with their name and favourite cartoon characters or building a chair from scratch, creating furniture pieces specially for them will make them light up with joy.

4. Fleece Blanket

If you aren't a quilter, you can still create something your child can cuddle up in that they will love. You don't even have to be able to sew to create a personalized fleece tie blanket for your child. Fleece fabric comes in a wide array of styles and designs. You can choose a fabric in their favourite color, imprinted with the logo of their favourite sports team or their favourite Disney characters.

5. Personalized Placemats

Gifts don't have to be time consuming or laborious to make in order to be special. Kids love pretty much anything made just for them because it makes them feel special. You don't even have to be particularly crafty to create a gift your child will love. You can cut a piece of poster board in your child's favourite colour, decorate it as you wish and then cover it with clear contact paper, run it through a laminator or have it laminated at a print shop.

In a world where kids are constantly bombarded with media advertising a wide range of toys and products specifically to them, it can be hard to remember that what kids really love is what fuels their imagination or makes them feel special. Save yourself some money and frustration and take some time to make something for your child instead. You don't even have to be particularly talented to make something your child will cherish.
