Having trouble planning a birthday party for your 12-year-old? They’re at that age where being cool is ultra-important and depending on their maturity level it can be really tough to plan a birthday party for them. You want to plan something fun for them where they can maintain some level of independence and require minimal supervision. In order to help you out, I’ve come up with several birthday party ideas for 12 year-olds in San Francisco:

House of Air Trampoline Park

You are never to old to have a ton of fun bouncing around at a trampoline park. House of Air has over 8,000 square feet of trampoline to play dodgeball or try skateboard tricks on. You can reserve a birthday party table or event room ahead of time, and perhaps the best thing is that they you don’t have to clean up anything afterwards! I suggest visiting their website to check out their party packages.

Children’s Creativity Museum

Make a music video at Children’s Creativity Museum. For the price of $500 (for up to 20 people) you receive admission to the museum, a private birthday party room, birthday party coordinators, decorations and best of all – you get to make a music video! Kids dress up in a costume of their choice, compose their song and dance and then record!

Sweethardt Photography

How about a photo shoot. While this is probably more suited to girls, unless your young guy is a real camera ham, a photo shoot can be a fun way to create a lasting memory. Get dressed up, or wear costumes and get your photos done professionally! Sweethardt Photography, whose work has been published in The Atlantic and Italian Vogue online, will meet you at the location of your choosing!

San Francisco Zoo

You never get too old for the zoo (I still love going here, possibly more than the kids do, but whatever!). Tweens are only $9 ($5.50 with San Francisco resident ID) each to get into the zoo, which is great. Take a ride on the little steam train, attend a penguin or grizzly bear feeding, and check out the Wildlife Theater at 2 p.m. (runs June through September).

Bowlmor Bowling Alley

Pick teams and go glow bowling! Bowlmor Lanes in Cupertino offers party rentals, but if you reserve ahead with a group you can also gain access to a couple side-by-side lanes with semi-private banquettes. From Sunday to Friday, 4 to 7 pm they also have good appetizer specials.

Peninsula Party rentals

Throw a theme party! Peninsula Party has all kinds of cool party supplies. Why not throw a beach themed party, featuring virgin margaritas with cool garnishes, and play “beach”-volleyball in the backyard or do an indoor treasure hunt! Get a cool custom beach-themed cake from Schuberts Bakery (my favorite) or The Cakemaker , or make beach-themed cupcakes at home and have the kids decorate them. I found some really simple but cute ones on Martha Stewart.

Swimming at one of San Francisco’s Recreation Centers

Take the beach party a bit further and go swimming at one of San Francisco’s aquatic centers. I like the Stonestown YMCA on Eucalyptus Drive and North Beach Pool on Lombard Street (closed on Sundays). I recommend checking the schedule before you go to ensure you aren’t going during an event or a while a lot of classes are on.

And there you have it! I hope this has helped you with coming up with birthday party ideas for your 12 year old in San Francisco.
