Spring Clean Your Parenting Approach

Published Apr 8, 2016 | Updated Feb 19, 2020

Now that spring has finally sprung it is time to take on the daunting task of dun dun dun spring cleaning! However, rather than telling you what to throw away and how to declutter, we’ve decided to spice things up & instead help you "Spring Clean Your Parenting Approach".

Spring is the perfect time for fresh starts.

Out with the old. In with the new!

The same goes for your parenting approach. Spring is the perfect time to clear out any relationship or mental clutter.

Whether you or your kids, need an attitude adjustment, a wake up call in school, or simply a fresh perspective we are here to help!

Below are just a few easy tips and tricks to help reset your parenting approach and get you on the right mindset.

  • First and foremost stop comparing your child, or yourself to others. Every family situation is unique. It may look like your friends, family and neighbours have their lives 100% together, but that is far from the truth! Take a deep breath and just be the best Mom/Dad you can be.

  • This may seem counterintuitive but slow down! Parents and families today are trying to do too much! When your day is jammed packed from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. you often miss the opportunity to enjoy some of life’s greatest pleasures. Instead, dial it down on the activities and just relax a little. Go for a walk. Watch the sunset. Play catch in the park. Do things that will rejuvenate both you and your family.

  • As most parents know, if something has the chance of going wrong it will. However, instead of focusing on the negative try to celebrate the positive in every situation. Were you late to soccer, but your daughter scored the winning goal? Did you miss your child’s band recital, but solidified a huge client at work? To put it simply, there is a light at the end of every tunnel, you just have to find it!

  • Take a break. Being a full-time Mom or Dad is undoubtedly one of the hardest jobs on the planet! Being on the clock 24/7 is both mentally and physically draining so it is important to take a break. Call up Grandma and Grandpa, a babysitter, or anyone you trust to watch the kiddos for a while. You’ll get a well deserved break and your kids may come back appreciating you even more.

Now with all of this in mind, being a parent will still be one of the hardest things you will ever have to do. Even if you successfully spring clean your parenting approach there will be many days that you will be stressed and challenged.

However, refreshing your focus and developing a positive outlook on parenting will do wonders for you and your family. So cut yourself a little slack and spring into the new season with a fresh perspective.
