Now that the kiddies are out of school, I’m sure some of you are stressing about how to occupy their time! No need to fret, there are tons of fun things to do with kids San Francisco! Here’s our top picks for summer fun!
Location: Beside Pier 39, SF
With 20,000 animals, you can expect some unforgetable encounters of the marine kind at the Aquarium of the Bay. The facility boasts 300 feet of clear acrylic tunnels holding 700,000 gallons of bay water that sustains the animals, from octopuses to eight-foot native, sevengill sharks. Visitors are also treated to mesmerizing walls of jellies and a chance to touch bat rays, skates and “splash zone” animals.
Location: 24th St. and York and Bryant
The park’s design features play off the site’s existing colorful murals by transforming painted images into a kaleidoscope of hues and three-dimensional forms. With conventional play equipment, including a teeter-totter and swing, the park also features a sculptural, mosaic snake with children’s slides at its head. The tail of the snake wraps around a playful water-spray feature. Not many people know the trick to operating the jets of water that squirt up from a few holes in the ground. (Hint: press the green button on the post near the bushes and you’ll be in for a treat!)
New Location: Pier 15, San Francisco
With a brand new location to explore, the Exploratorium is a perfect place to show kids how science can be fun and exciting! The Exploratorium is a museum of science, art, and human perception with cool exhibits that you may not even think about out in the real world. This place gets quite busy so go on a sunny day (it’s a popular rainy day tourist attraction) and avoid the morning hours when schools and summer camps commonly visit.
Location: 1 Zoo Road, SF
This 100 acre Zoo has cozy appeal, beautiful grounds, and a few special features that keep the kids coming back. Of course, the animals are the star of the show, and the habitats are designed well to show them off. Popular animal exhibits feature red kangaroos, African lions, the ever-sleepy koalas, lemurs, gorillas, the relatively humongous tiger salamanders, giant millipedes, great one-horned rhinos and the always-impressive grizzly bears. Be at the grizzly paddock at feeding time for a fearsome show.
Location: 221 Fourth Street, SF
There are so many activities to do that you’ll never get stuck doing the same thing twice. Make stop motion movies with clay creatures, record a music video, build things from blocks and magnet toys, or just pull some random crafts out of a hat! The activities in this museum best suit children 5 years and up.
Location: 55 Music Concourse Dr., Golden Gate Park
Have you ever seen an Albino Alligator? An African Penguin feeding time or Cichlids protecting their young? The California Academy of Sciences houses an aquarium, the rain forests of the world, a planetarium and a natural history museum; all filled with hundreds of innovative and engaging exhibits and thousands of animals. Tip: Have your kids wear bright orange and you’ll be ready to snap a photo of butterflies taking a break on their shoulders!
