Chinese Lunar New year is considered the most important and extravagant traditional Chinese celebration of the year. The celebration falls on a different day each year depending on the cycles of the moon and the sun. This year, the celebrations start on Jan 31 and ends 15 days later with the arrival of the full moon. Chinese New Year is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate Chinese Culture and discover a National Historic Site – Victoria’s Chinatown! Victoria’s Chinatown is actually Canada’s oldest; in the 1800′s Victoria was a supply centre for gold miners who were seeking to strike it rich in the Fraser River, and Chinatown, with its memorable Gates of Harmonious Interest have been open to merchants and visitors ever since. Silk Road Chinese Tea Ceremony – Feb 1

On February 1, greet the Year of the Horse with an auspicious Chinese Tea Ceremony that is believed to bring blessings, luck and prosperity in the coming year.  Learn basic steps, brewing and tasting techniques, as you enjoy the world’s oldest tea ceremony at 11 am!

Esquimalt Branch Library – Feb 1

Gung Hay Fat Choy! Wear red and welcome Chinese New Year on February 1 (2:30-3:30) at the Esquimalt library with stories and crafts about horses and the story of the Chinese zodiac.

Chinese New Year Lion Dance Parade – Jan 31

At noon on Jan 31, marvel at the auspicious Lion Dance parade throughout Chinatown bringing blessings for the New Year. Spectators line the streets to witness this performance rich with colourful and elaborate costumes, live music and traditional dance so arrive early!

Chinatown Walks – Saturdays

Join historian John Adams for Chinatown Walks every Saturday at 10:30 am throughout the year to learn about the myths and mysteries of Chinatown.

A Harmonious Celebration – Jan 26

See a traditional lion dance, exquisite Chinese costume fashion show, Chinese dancing and music at this celebration put on by the Victoria Conservatory of Music! This free family-friendly event will feature traditional Chinese dancing and music including the Chinese Lion Dance by the Wong Sheung Hung Fut Kung Fu Club, Victoria Chinese Culture Club Dancers in costume, VCM strings and keyboard students performing with faculty and much more. Master of Ceremonies for the event is Alan Lowe, former Victoria Mayor. Jan 26, 2:30-3:30 at the Alix Goolden Performance Hall.
